The remains of five of the victims were discovered in or near burned out cars, three outside residences and one inside a home, Honea said. Two people were reported killed.

Wildfires burned out of control on Friday across California, killing at least nine people in a mountain town and forcing residents to flee the upscale beach community of Malibu in the face of a monster fire storm.

Actress Shannen Doherty, who was in Auckland last month for the Armageddon festival, is among the celebrities whose homes were believed threatened.

Sheriff's investigators have begun the agonizing task of scouring through the wreckage of California's most destructive fire on record in search of the dead. If you or anyone you know happens to be anywhere near the Camp Fire, please evacuate to safety.

This year's round of wildfires is reported to have been the worst on record, with almost 7600 blazes having burnt almost 7000 square kilometers of land.

Fire burned in famously ritzy coastal spots like Malibu, where Lady Gaga, Kim Kardashian West, Guillermo del Toro and Martin Sheen were among those forced out of their homes amid a citywide evacuation order. Officials said two firefighters and multiple residents were injured.

An unnamed survivor has filmed the moment he revisited the area in the northern town of Paradise, Butte County, where people he knew were killed.

Flames engulfed hospitals, homes and other structures as it whipped through Paradise. Most of the surrounding structures were leveled.

'We're gonna get fire, ' the girl says. They were backed up by helicopters and water tankers.

Authorities announced Friday that a quarter of a million people are under evacuation orders as wind-whipped flames rage through scenic areas west of Los Angeles and burn toward the sea. She said she has had a house in Malibu since 1972 and "can't bear the thought of there being no Malibu". Altogether, at least nine people have died and more than 250,000 people driven out of their homes.

Back in Paradise, the air still clogged with smoke, residents who stayed behind to try to save their property or who managed to get back to their neighborhoods found cars incinerated and homes reduced to rubble. The president made the comments as the state is battling multiple deadly wildfires.

Drought, warmer weather attributed to climate change and home construction deeper into forests have led to more destructive wildfire seasons that have been starting earlier and lasting longer.

California governor Jerry Brown is requesting a "major disaster declaration" from President Donald Trump for the wildfires burning at both ends of the state.

Trump, on a trip to France, said in a Twitter post early Sunday, "With proper Forest Management, we can stop the devastation constantly going on in California".

The Pasadena Fire Association also responded, writing that Trump was wrong because "the fires in So". The fires in So.

U.S. president Donald Trump, who is now in Paris to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I, took to Twitter early Saturday morning to blame poor forest management for the fires now laying ruin to the state.

"It's devastation, total devastation, it's pretty incredible something like this occurred", said firefighter Mark Nees, who arrived from neighboring OR to help his California colleagues.
