Arizona has rejected petty political attacks, says Democrat Kyrsten Sinema

Republican Congresswoman Martha McSally conceded to Democrat Congresswoman Kysten Sinema Monday night after a drawn out campaign for retiring U.S. Senator Jeff Flake's seat.

Her race against Republican Martha McSally was so tight that her victory was not decided until Monday, after a slow count of postal ballots gave her an insurmountable lead.

Democrat Rep. Kyrsten Sinema has officially won Arizona's open Senate seat, nearly a week after the midterm congressional elections, reducing Republicans' net gain in the chamber to a single seat.

In fact, her 54,000-vote lead over Republican Frank Riggs is larger than the one that Sinema had over McSally.

The 42-year-old was elected as a Democrat to the state legislature in 2004 and carved out a reputation as a liberal who could work with her conservative colleagues. Results in Florida and MS are still outstanding.

It was a closely-watched contest, and the vote-tallying dragged out almost a full week after polls closed.

The contest drew more than $90 million in spending, including more than $58 million by outside groups, according to Federal Election Commission reports.

The lawsuit was settled shortly after in Maricopa County Superior Court, when it was determined that all 15 of Arizona's counties had until 5 p.m. Wednesday to "cure" early ballots that were submitted with signatures that didn't match the voter registration signatures. Because of a state law requiring ballots to be sealed and signed, and signatures to match those on voter registration forms, it routinely takes the state longer than most to tally its results.

Last month, a 2006 interview with the nightlife magazine 944 also resurfaced, in which Sinema suggested that women who choose to be full-time homemakers or mothers have nothing to be proud of. Republican Sen. Jon Kyl, who was appointed after McCain's death, has pledged not to run.

Rather than face an all-but-certain loss to a Trump-aligned candidate in a primary, Flake retired, opening up the seat on this year's ballot.

Referring to longtime Arizona Sen. John McCain's seat, and it remains to be seen whether Kyl will choose to stay or step down. Hilary Clinton had lost the State to Donald Trump by a margin of 4% in 2016. "But Arizona proved that there is a better way forward".

Ms. Sinema outperformed Ms. McSally in the latter's own Congressional district.

She will replace Sen. On the other hand, McSally was hurt by her vote to strip people of coverage for pre-existing conditions, something she tried to deny. Sinema got another big boost from Pima County, where she is continuing to pick up four votes for every three for McSally. The former Air Force combat pilot adopted an aggressive tone, accusing Sinema of supporting treason over her 2003 remark that it was "fine" if a radio host who was asking her a question joined the Taliban.

Latino Democratic strategists, meanwhile, groused that Sinema had moved too far right on immigration to appeal to a crucial, growing portion of the Democratic electorate.
