Severe 'devil winds' expected to whip up deadly California blazes

The Camp Fire in northern California reduced the town of Paradise to rubble and killed at least 23 people, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

It is also the state's third most deadly fire. "Your house can be rebuilt but you can't bring your life back", said Chief Daryl Osby of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. The severely burned bodies were discovered in a vehicle on a long residential driveway on a stretch of Mulholland Highway in Malibu, where most of the surrounding structures had burned.

"There is no reason for these massive, deadly and costly forest fires in California except that forest management is so poor", Trump tweeted. The Woolsey Fire in Ventura County has now affected more than 83,000 acres with 10% of the fire contained.

Evacuation orders have been issued to more than 250,000 people across California, with authorities urging residents not to ignore warnings to flee.

More than 200 people were still unaccounted for after the fire, Honea said, though numerous missing may be in shelters and unable to contact loved ones who reported them to authorities.

The blaze known as the Camp Fire started spreading through Butte County on Thursday, and firefighters were powerless to stop it destroying the town of Paradise.

The fire broke out in the Hill Canyon area on Thursday and spread quickly, jumping a major road and scorching thousands of acres of land.

"The back of my trousers were on fire", she said.

It is estimated that more than 180 homes have perished in the disaster, which threatens Calabasas, Malibu, Agoura, Topanga, Hidden Hills, and West Hills. The Santa Ana winds picked up today creating tougher conditions for firefighters. Together, they were blamed for 44 deaths, including two in celebrity-studded Malibu in Southern California, where firefighters appeared to be gaining ground against a roughly 143-square-mile (370-square-kilometer) blaze that destroyed at least 370 structures, with hundreds more feared lost.

They estimate they will need 3 weeks to fully contain the blaze. But with strong winds projected through the beginning of the new week, containing the fire will be more hard.

Officials reopened U.S. Highway 101 late Sunday to allow people to get into neighborhoods that had been threatened by fire, marking positive developments even though gusty, dry winds returned and fanned new fires.

Meteorologist David Gomberg told the Los Angeles Times newspaper that fire tornadoes were possible. PG&E had no comment on the email, and state officials said the cause of the inferno was under investigation.

Celebrities also criticised Mr Trump's unsympathetic reaction, with California-born singer Katy Perry called it an "absolutely heartless response".

"Just remember things can be replaced but we can't", said one.
