Wildfire triggers evacuation order for Malibu

A series of fast-moving wildfires is racing Friday up and down California, leaving at least five dead, destroying thousands of structures and forcing thousands of residents to evacuate through flame-lined streets.

"It's a very unsafe and very serious situation", Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea said.

The Butte County Sherriff's Office have confirmed several more fatalities as they continue their response to the deadly Camp Fire now raging in Northern California.

The Butte County Coroner's Office has formed an interagency team to investigate and identify additional fatalities, according to the release.

The fire in Paradise burned fast, reports CBS News' David Begnaud.

Evacuations were ordered for the east side of Chico, a city of about 93,000 people, as flames from the blaze were being driven by 56-kilometer-per-hour winds.

While there are numerous reports on social media of missing persons - the actor James Woods even started amplifying posts Thursday evening - there have been no confirmed deaths yet.

Several active fires are burning in parts of Northern California, and further south, a number of fires are centered in the Los Angeles area, according to a California wildfire map. This means some phone numbers are down.

The Paradise fire is known as the Camp fire in California, and has now raged across 31 miles (20,000 acres) of the state.

The Los Angeles Police Department also issued a citywide tactical alert for the fire, allowing its units to assist in handling the fire.

Despite evacuations in Malibu and flames threatening near campus, Pepperdine University called for students and staff to shelter in place.

Meanwhile, two wildfires burning near Los Angeles have forced thousands more to evacuate, including the entire city of Malibu. The Hill fire pushed through canyons to the edge of Camarillo Springs and Cal State Channel Islands, both of which were evacuated.

Another blaze just west of that area, dubbed the Hill Fire, topped 10,000 acres on Thursday.

California Gov. -elect Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency and requested federal funds to fight the fires on Thursday while Gov.

Southern California is reeling from the impact of two fires burning near some of the country's most populated cities.

The hospital was totally destroyed, Mike Mangas, a spokesman for operator Dignity Health, told Action News Now.

"Pretty much the community of Paradise is destroyed, it's that kind of devastation", he also told The Associated Press.

The victims' bodies were found in vehicles torched by the flames in the town of Paradise, north east of San Francisco.

As of 5:30 a.m. ET, the fire was 0% contained.

"It's a mandatory evacuation, what that means is, you don't have to leave, we want you to leave", Ventura County Fire spokesman Rich Macklan told The Independent on November 9.

Calabasas city officials advised residents not under mandatory evacuation orders to prepare to leave by gathering their IDs, medications, important documents, emergency supplies and a change of clothes. The Ventura County Fire Department has also ordered evacuation of some communities in the path of the fire, which erupted a few miles from the site of Wednesday night's deadly mass shooting at a Thousand Oaks bar. At least 75,000 homes in western Los Angeles and eastern Ventura County were evacuated.
