‘MAKE FRANCE GREAT AGAIN!’: Trump Goes Ballistic, Attacks Macron, Mocks France

Oscar PerryNov 15, 2018

China said on Wednesday that it had never posed a threat to Europe as it responded to a proposal by French President Emmanuel Macron for a "European army" to defend the bloc against China, Russia, and even the US. Rather, as the French leader made clear in an interview with CNN, Macron believes European nations should increase their defense spending, in order to more equitably share the burden of funding North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, precisely as Trump has requested - he just doesn't want to invest that new spending in American munitions.

Days after the comments were made, Mr Trump took to Twitter to air his views, declaring that "Emmanuel Macron suggests building its own army to protect Europe against the US, China and Russian Federation".

"Here on the revered grounds of Suresnes American Cemetery lie more than 1,500 USA service members who made the ultimate sacrifice in the first world war", Trump said, in his remarks at the cemetery, according to the American Battle Monuments Commission. "When we say 'our interests come first, those of others don't matter, ' we erase the very thing that a nation holds most precious, that which gives it life and makes it great: its moral values".

In his tweets on Tuesday, Trump again referenced France's spending, writing: "Pay for North Atlantic Treaty Organisation or not!"

Trump went on to assail Macron's approval rating and the unemployment rate in France.

Since assuming office previous year, the Trump administration has long accused Europe of failing to pay enough for North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, and of causing large trade deficit on the U.S. side through unfair trade practices.

"I suggested driving. Secret Service said NO", he wrote.

Trump, in an apparent attempt to drum up support for his embrace of "nationalism" ― a term Macron over the weekend decried as a "betrayal of patriotism" ― declared that "there is no country more Nationalist than France, very proud people-and rightfully so!"

As reported by The Guardian, the Rassemblement National (National Rally), Marine Le Pen's far-right party, which had previously approved Trump, also criticised the USA president over the attack. Trump's approval rating, despite overwhelmingly negative media coverage, stood at 46 percent on November 13, according to Rasmussen, the pollster which most accurately predicted Trump's victory in 2016.

It's the second time Trump has slammed Macron's plan for a European army; he first tweeted about the issue on Friday as he arrived in Paris.

Trump tweeted about a suggestion by French President Emmanuel Macron that Europe is building up its militaries because the continent can no longer depend on the U.S. for defense. "Little reported-Fake News!" he tweeted.

Trump has declared himself a "nationalist", with an America First outlook on worldwide relations.

The president also complained Tuesday about tariffs on American wines sold in France.

The French and the American leaders met on Saturday in Paris before ceremonies commemorating a century since the armistice of World War I.

Macron apparently drew Trump's ire by starkly rejecting nationalism during the WWI ceremony at the Arc de Triomphe last Sunday, an implicit critique of the "America First" policies which have led Trump to pull out of several key global agreements. Speech next day at American Cemetary in pouring rain!

'The problem is that France makes it very hard for the U.S.to sell its wines into France, and charges big Tariffs, whereas the USA makes it easy for French wines, and charges very small Tariffs.

Trump's relationship with French President Emmanuel Macron has been deteriorating in recent weeks. French officials tried to excuse Macron's remarks by claiming they were taken "out of context". It's not fair, it must change, ' he noted.
