Don't Eat Romaine Lettuce, Period — CDC

Wayne CurryNov 21, 2018

Romaine lettuce is unsafe to eat after being linked to a multi-state E. coli outbreak, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Tuesday.

Thus far, cases have been identified in California, Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Connecticut, Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

"A traceback investigation" is underway to find the source of the romaine lettuce consumed by people who became ill", the agency said. The warning comes just months after romaine lettuce was linked to E.coli which sickened dozens across the country, and even led to five deaths.

If you're not sure whether your bagged lettuce includes romaine, chuck it out, the CDC says.

Of the 53 cases reported, the CDC said, 31 patients had to be hospitalized.

"Illnesses that occurred after October 30, 2018, might not yet be reported due to the time it takes between when a person becomes ill with E. coli infection and when the illness is reported".

This is a different strain from the one responsible for another romaine lettuce scare in the USA earlier this year, when the vegetable caused E. coli infections in more than 200 people in 30 states, killing five people. Toss it. In fact, the alert includes advice on how to clean your refrigerator if romaine has been inside it recently.

Restaurants are also advised to avoid serving romaine lettuce in any form, be it full leaves, chopped, or otherwise.

Most people get better within 5-7 days.

In alarming news for anyone who, say, ate a romaine lettuce salad in the past week: the CDC is warning of a new E. coli contamination. Some infections are very mild, but others are severe or even life-threatening. Some people may have a fever, which usually is not very high (less than 101˚F/38.5˚C).
