NASA's InSight Mars Lander Set To Touch Down Monday

Kerry GarnerНоя 24, 2018

Jezero Crater will be where NASA's yet-to-be-named rover will land on February 18, 2021, the space agency announced today.

Scientists have debated where to land the rover for the past four years, and whittled down their decision from more than 60 possible sites.

The Rover mission is set to launch in July 2020 from Cape Canaveral.

NASA said as well as its river delta and small crater impacts, the site contains numerous boulders and rocks to the east, cliffs to the west and depressions filled with aeolian bedforms (wind-derived ripples in sand that could trap a rover) in several locations. Scientists say the site is ideal because of its terrain with landforms dating from as far as long as 3.6 billion years ago.

Experts believe the 28-mile (45-kilometer) wide basin could have collected and preserved ancient organic molecules and other signs of microbial life. It takes skill, focus and years of preparation, ' said Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator for the Science Mission Directorate at Nasa.

Apart from the two missions in 2020, there are no plans for the existing orbiters yet.

NASA said Jezero won out because of its mix of scientific promise and accessibility.

"But what was once out of reach is now conceivable, thanks to the 2020 engineering team and advances in Mars entry, descent and landing technologies".

Named WALL-E and EVE after the main characters in the 2008 animated movie, the twin CubeSats will pass within a few thousand miles (kilometres) of Mars as the lander attempts its dicey touchdown. The mission aims to study the interior of Mars by drilling down and taking samples of the rock and soil deep beneath the surface. Researchers and engineers are buckling down on all the equipment that the rover will use to carry out its activity, yet up until today, NASA still hadn't really chosen where on the Red Planet the rover would land.

A pair of tiny experimental satellites trailing NASA's InSight spacecraft all the way to Mars face their biggest test yet. For 728 earth days mission in NASA expect to remove the unit for about 29 GB of data that may shed light on the evolution of rocky planets, including Earth. China is planning to get in on the action with its first-ever Mars mission, also due for launch during 2020's favorable launch opportunity.
