Conservative vs. moderate in Mississippi Senate election

April FrancisНоя 28, 2018

The final chapter of the 2018 midterms is nearing a close in MS, where the prevalent themes of President Donald Trump and race have combined for a much closer contest than anyone expected in one of the country's most deeply conservative states.

Hyde-Smith has had several stumbles, defending herself after a photograph emerged of her wearing a replica Confederate soldier's hat, as well as a video of her praising a supporter by saying she would sit on the front row of a public hanging with him.

As Donald Trump prepares to travel to MS for two rallies ahead of Tuesday's runoff Senate election, the Republican candidate has come under new pressure over reports of involvement with Confederate imagery and history. Defeat would leave the Republicans with only a...

Hyde-Smith will be getting a boost from President Trump on Monday when he joins her at two rallies in the state - one in Tupelo and the other in Biloxi.

Lawrence County Academy was established in 1970, one year after the U.S. Supreme Court ordered MS to desegregate its schools.

It's the last U.S. Senate race to be decided in 2018 and will determine whether Republicans pad their slim majority.

That Hyde-Smith would be ahead shouldn't come as a surprise considering her alignment with President Donald Trump, who won the state by nearly 18 points.

Hyde-Smith is the first woman to represent MS in Congress since a temporary Senate appointment in April.

Hyde-Smith believes the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, should be repealed. Thad Cochran, who resigned in April because of health problems. She has made racially charged comments which have caused controversy.

"So, that's a Mississippi I want to be a part of, one of diversity, one of inclusion, one of different experiences ..." The Washington Post reported that in 2001, Hyde-Smith introduced a bill as a state senator to rename a stretch of highway to what it had been called in the 1930s: the Jefferson Davis Memorial Highway, after the president of the Confederacy. Her opponent in Tuesday's run-off election, former Democratic Representative Mike Espy, is an African-American.

For Espy, turnout is key.

The school, Lawrence County Academy, was set up for white parents to avoid sending their children to school with black children, according to the Free Press.

The apology failed to dim the outrage, which led to seven companies, including Walmart, to ask Hyde-Smith to refund the contributions. The state last elected a Democrat to the Senate in 1982. "That means that MS over party, MS over person - I don't care how powerful that person might be". A day earlier she received a donation from San Francisco Giants part-owner Charles B. Johnson. The league "has requested that the contribution be returned", the spokesperson said.
