Manafort met with Julian Assange ahead of 2016 leaks

Then, per the report, months after a meeting with Manafort, WikiLeaks released emails hacked from the Democratic National Committee by Russian intelligence officers.

Convicted felon Paul Manafort, a day after being accused by special counsel Robert Mueller of lying repeatedly to FBI investigators, claims he has never met WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, which The Guardian reported on Tuesday. The last meeting took place around March 2016, at about the time Manafort joined Trump's USA presidential campaign, the news outlet said.

The Guardian report cited "sources" saying Manafort saw Assange inside the Ecuadorian embassy in London "in 2013, 2015 and in spring 2016", with the latter meeting reportedly taking place "around March 2016". Sources in Ecuador tell the publication that Manafort's visit to the embassy was not logged.

A free-press advocacy group wants to see the documents after their existence was apparently let slip by prosecutors in another case.

After reaching a plea deal with federal prosecutors in September, Manafort lied repeatedly to investigators working for the special counsel's team while withholding information pertinent to the Russian Federation investigation, according to a court filing from Monday.

"Remember this day when the Guardian permitted a serial fabricator to totally destroy the paper's reputation", WikiLeaks tweeted.

Former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort is denying that he ever met WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange. The Associated Press reported August 18, 2016, that Manafort had lobbied in the US on behalf of politicians in Ukraine without disclosing to the USA government that he was working as a foreign agent.

Graff also pointed out that Ecuador has removed the ambassador that was Assange's ally in London and have blocked Assange from meeting with his lawyers.

Manafort's lawyers say that's not so - they said he believes he has offered "useful information".

WikiLeaks denied the report's claims. That third meeting came just months before WikiLeaks released a trove of politically damaging Hillary Clinton and Democratic Party emails that had been stolen by Russian Federation.

That dispute is playing out amid sometimes feverish speculation within Washington, D.C., that Mueller's investigation may be on the verge of unveiling more criminal charges, perhaps against another sub-cast of characters centered on political consultant Roger Stone.

Manafort pleaded guilty to conspiracy and witness tampering on September 14, nearly a year after he was first charged and following his conviction by a jury in a separate but related case on eight tax and banking crimes.
