The pipeline through Alaska had also been closed as a precaution but returned to service after seven hours as inspections revealed no damage to the facilities.

People went back inside after the first quake struck, but the 5.8 aftershock about five minutes later sent them running back into the streets.

A tsunami warning was issued along Alaska's southern coast with residents in Kodiak, a city of 6100 people on Kodiak Island, 400km south of Anchorage, were told to evacuate to higher ground immediately because a wave could hit within about 10 minutes.

The USGS reported dozens of aftershocks even after the tsunami warning was cancelled, reports CNN.

In Kenai, southwest of Anchorage, Brandon Slaton was home alone and soaking in his bathtub when the quake struck. "People going back to computers, meetings", Herz said.
