Bush's son and 43rd President George W. Bush shared the photograph and wrote: "As much as our family is going to miss this dog, we're comforted to know he'll bring the same joy to his new home as he did to 41".

"We are forever grateful to his service to the American people".

In an invocation opening Monday evening's ceremony, the U.S. House chaplain, the Rev. Patrick J Conroy, praised Bush's commitment to public service, from Navy pilot to congressman, United Nations ambassador, envoy to China and then Central Intelligence Agency director before being elected vice president and then president.

She also digs into personal issues, detailing a miscarriage, how she conceived daughters Malia, 20, and Sasha, 17, by in-vitro fertilization, and marriage counseling.

Following a departure ceremony at 12:30 p.m., the casket bearing the former president will be moved to Joint Base Andrews, Maryland, and flown back to Ellington Field, before being transported to St. Martin's Episcopal Church in Houston.

The former president who died on Friday aged 94 had a form of Parkinson's disease, and Sully could open doors, pick up items and summon help for him.

Baker, who served Bush as secretary of state, joined others in paying warm tribute on Sunday television talk shows. He would go on to serve as ambassador to the United Nations and China, head of the Central Intelligence Agency and chairman of the Republican National Committee before being elected to two terms as Ronald Reagan's vice-president.

The remains will then be transported by train for interment at the George Bush Presidential Library in College Station, Texas.

Bush is one of the few who had a Navy ship named after them while they were still alive.

Baker said Bush's last words, in a phone conversation with son George, were: "I love you, too". He will be honoured during several public and private events in Houston and Washington before his burial on Thursday in Texas. Picked up by Ronald Reagan to be his vice president in 1980, Bush eventually succeeded Reagan in 1988, easily defeating his Democratic opponent Michael Dukakis in a landslide victory.

Sully went to work with Bush this summer after former first lady Barbara Bush passed away earlier this year.
