After Tumultuous Season, Urban Meyer To Leave Ohio State

May JohnsonDec 05, 2018

Offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Ryan Day will take over as head coach.

It started with him being placed on administrative leave back in July after reports surfaced that he was aware of spousal abuse allegations involving Zach Smith, an assistant coach on his staff, a claim he vehemently denied but eventually led to a three-game suspension by the university.

So, how does that affect Penn State and the rest of the Big Ten? The Buckeyes were very good before Meyer arrived and they are likely to still be very good after he's gone. He coached wide receivers in 1987. He's an Ohio State guy to his core.

Meyer also said that he could not adapt to a "CEO" type style with a more hands-off approach if he wanted to coach differently to extend his career. Those are high expectations for Day to follow, but not necessarily unrealistic.

While Day wasn't officially named coach-in-waiting, there were reports that senior officials were considering the role. He won 90.1 percent of his games at Ohio State, the best percentage in school history, ahead of Jim Tressel (82.8), Bruce (75.5) and Woody Hayes (76.1).

Trump accuses Mueller of 'ruining lives'
In the same filing, they said that Manafort "believes he has provided truthful information". But things between the special counsel and Manafort have reportedly been rocky for a while.

"It has been an honor to represent for the last seven years this football program, my home state of OH, this university and community that I care so deeply about", Meyer said. "He is known for getting his guys on the right track, he's always sharp with his reads, he understands the game so well and he's so passionate about it". But the promotion of offensive coordinator Ryan Day should ensure recruits don't jump to Happy Valley or elsewhere.

With the news of Meyer retiring due to health concerns stemming from the arachnoid cyst in his brain, this retirement feels different and the last time Meyer coaches could be the 2019 Rose Bowl.

After seven years and a national championship at Ohio State, the 54-year-old Meyer will formally announce his departure today at a news conference.

Issues from the cyst, that Meyer had surgery to drain in 2014, have become more severe in recent months. A year later, he actually resigned, saying he wanted to spend more time with his family.

If Smith's plan to keep the Meyer machine churning through Day works, then Franklin and the rest of the Big Ten East still have quite the challenge on their hands. He tweeted Tuesday he is still committed to the Buckeyes. To me, after being around him it might be easy for me to say that, how special of a player he is, but to me it's obvious.
