Microsoft Edge to Run On Google Chrome's Rendering Engine

Marion JacobsDec 05, 2018

Now, however, we may be near the point in which Microsoft throws in the towel and switches to a browser based on Chromium, Google's open-source browser project upon which Chrome (and several other browser, like fearless or Opera) is built.

Microsoft Edge's days could be numbered if a new report turns out to be true.

Google Chrome is overwhelmingly the dominant web browser. Said to be codenamed Anaheim, the news Microsoft has a new rendering engine on the horizon will go down well with those who have been disappointed by Edge.

Also, the fact that Microsoft is looking into using an open source engine like Chromium sounds pretty promising. That's exactly what Microsoft is doing after years of trying to make Edge work as a browser-but it's probably not totally replacing it.

Instead, it's more likely that Microsoft will move away from EdgeHTML and build this new version of Edge with the open source Chromium rendering engine.

Although there isn't a lot of content encoded with AV1, if you want to stay ahead of the curve, or you came across a video using the new codec, and you can't watch it, Microsoft is already making available an extension for Windows 10 to play AV1 videos on your device.

According to The Verge, we could see an announcement with this new project as early as this week, but until then we'll file this under strictly under the "rumor" category, and as such note that any detail of this could change between now and an official release. "We are fully committed to continuing to do so into the future, across the full spectrum of Windows 10 platforms and form factors". Some, including Mozilla developers, have been anxious that as Blink and WebKit's (a very similar rendering engine to Blink) market share increases, developers will have no interest in testing their websites on other browsers. And if they are, other people can just fork them and develop their own version.

Microsoft engineers were recently discovered committing code for a Chromium project created to get Google Chrome to work on Windows 10 for ARM.
