Comey Dodges Key Question About Using Dossier To Get FISA Warrant

The interview comes as GOP lawmakers are wrapping up a yearlong investigation into decisions made at the Justice Department during the 2016 presidential election.

Democrats complain Republicans are simply trying to fuel a conspiracy theory to protect Trump from the ongoing Russian Federation probe led by special counsel Robert Mueller. Walking into the meeting, Comey said he might answer questions afterward.

Former FBI Director James Comey left his hearing with the Republican lead House of Representatives on Friday and promptly trashed the process.

He initially challenged the subpoena to appear before the committee and instead pressed for a public hearing out of concerns his comments would be selectively leaked and taken out of context.

Comey Dodges Key Question About Using Dossier To Get FISA Warrant

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., and House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Trey Gowdy, R-SC, published the 235-page transcript as a part of an agreement with Comey. "But I will resist a "closed door" thing because I've seen enough of their selective leaking and distortion". Republicans argue that department officials were biased against Trump as they started the investigation and cleared Clinton in a separate probe into her email use.

Congressman Darrell Issa said he wanted answers about what he called the "fake dossier", a 2016 intelligence report including opposition research that alleges misconduct and ties between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation. Democrats and Comey rebuked that claim, instead saying there were only a handful of questions that he could not answer because of ongoing criminal investigations. Andy Biggs of Arizona and Mark Meadows of North Carolina, also suggested they might need a second session with Comey if they didn't finish their interview by a late afternoon deadline.

The New York congressman Jerrold Nadler, who is the top Democrat on the judiciary panel, said he would end the investigation in January when Democrats took over the House. "The entire goal of this investigation is to cast aspersions on the real investigation, which is Mueller".

Throughout the day, both Democrats and Republicans inside the room would emerge to reveal tidbits of information to reporters about what was unraveling inside.

A transcript of Comey's sit down with Congress is expected to be released in the next 24 hours.

Gowdy and House Judiciary Chairman Robert W. Goodlatte threw cold water on that proposal, arguing that previous public hearings with witnesses, like one with former Federal Bureau of Investigation counterintelligence agent Peter Strzok this past summer, were a political farce as members from both parties used the high-profile nature of the interview to grandstand.

Department of Justice Inspector General Michael Horowitz released a review of the email investigation on June 14.
