Apple plans to resolve China iPhone ban with a software update

Apple's update would presumably alter or remove some of the phones' features, but the company told Reuters the functionality related to the patents was "minor".

Now that Qualcomm has successfully been granted an injunction against certain models of the iPhone in China, Apple is working to push out an iOS update that will attempt to remove the alleged infringing aspects. "My understanding is the ban should be enforced and could extend to new models based on recent Qualcomm court filings". That meant, it said, phones like the newest iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR could remain on sale.

Apple also emphasizes the notion that an iPhone ban in the country could cost it millions of dollars per day and would also impact the Chinese government and consumers.

Apple said: "Based on the iPhone models we offer today in China, we believe we are in compliance". It's unclear exactly what changes that will encompass, and how noticeable they'll be to actual iPhone owners. The patents relate to how applications are handled and managed on a smartphone and how the photos are resized. As a result, Kuo anticipates that Apple during the first quarter of 2019 will sell anywhere from 38 to 42 million iPhones, a steep decline from his initial projection of 47-52 million units.

Fugitive businessman arrives in United Kingdom court; verdict expected soon
The 62-year-old former Kingfisher Airlines owner has been on bail since his arrest on an extradition warrant in April 2017. India's enforcement directorate has been investigating the tycoon's debts linked to the airline, which amount to £977m.

In spite of the court injunctions, Apple has not pulled the affected iPhone models from its official online and offline sales platforms in China.

Earlier this week, a Chinese court ordered a sales ban of some old Apple iPhone against Qualcomm's patent violations.

It's the latest step in a long-running saga played out in courtrooms across the world between the two companies.

Since the ban went into effect, Apple has argued that it does not apply to any of the iPhones it now sells due to the fact they run iOS 12, not iOS 11. However Apple claimed the chip-maker was trying to squeeze an unfair percentage of licensing fees out of the deal, and artificially control the LTE market. Qualcomm retaliated with a campaign touting how much better their wireless modems are than Intel's.
