Is Theresa May planning a second referendum... without Remain as an option?

April FrancisDec 18, 2018

"If MPs (lawmakers) dig in against the prime minister's deal and then hunker down in their different corners, none with a majority, the country will face serious trouble".

Separately, Foreign Minister Jeremy Hunt suggested Britain could thrive if it left the European Union with no deal, and admitted he would like to "have a crack" at May's job.

Only around ten Tory MPs have publicly stated their support for a second vote, but I'm told that a sizeable group of Europhile ministers and MPs are waiting in the wings to see if it emerges as the most likely option and would, with various degrees of reluctance, eventually give it their backing.

Britain's government is not preparing for a second referendum on Brexit, ministers said on Sunday, sticking to the script that Prime Minister Theresa May's deal could still pass through Parliament with a few changes.

"The UK is going to be so inwardly consumed with managing the impact of Brexit that we could lose a focused partner on the worldwide stage for a period of time", Magsamen said.

"It will happen over Christmas, it's not going to happen this week, it's not going to be quick, it will happen some time in the New Year", he told the BBC's Andrew Marr show.

Yet even as part of the EU, Britain has been the premier global ally of the United States, controversially joining the invasion of Iraq despite widespread European opposition.

May last week survived a confidence vote initiated by members of her own Conservative Party because of her Brexit strategy but she is badly weakened after a third of her parliamentary party voted to be rid of her. In October, London and Brussels agreed on the text of an agreement defining the conditions for the UK's exit from the bloc. That's not something she admitted was possible last month.

Meanwhile, Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt has said the United Kingdom will "flourish and prosper" even if it leaves the European Union with no deal.

Bulls Players Contacted Union Over New Coach Jim Boylen
The sellout crowd had several reasons to root for Williams, who was facing off against one of the players he idolized growing up. But Davis also had two shots blocked by Celtics rookie Robert Williams III.

However the Foreign Secretary told The Sunday Telegraph: "I've always thought that even in a no-deal situation this is a great country, we'll find a way to flourish and prosper".

"We can not, as he would, abdicate responsibility for this decision. We are here to act on the will of the British people clearly expressed in the referendum".

The leading Brexit supporter added that "if there is a referendum. people like me will immediately start asking that it's best of three".

The argument for a second referendum advanced by one minister was simple: If nothing can get through Parliament - and it looks like nothing can - the question needs to go back to voters.

"That would be a very big negative for the deal", Trump said.

The former Labour prime minister's comments come after Theresa May accused him of "undermining" her Brexit negotiations by calling for a second referendum, adding that his remarks were an "insult to the office he once held".

Prime Minister May was apparently incensed by his manoeuvres last week, issuing a statement on Saturday night scolding her predecessor.

Blair called for MPs to be given a series of votes on alternative Brexit options - an approach now favoured by several cabinet ministers, including Amber Rudd and Liam Fox.

The newspaper also claimed that Mrs May's chief of staff, Gavin Barwell was supportive of the idea.
