Susan Collins says there’s ‘absolutely no excuse to shut down government’

April FrancisDec 18, 2018

The Obama administration did not enforce the separation policy the way the Trump administration has done.

Sunday's tweet seemed to suggest he was considering reinforcement.

Bills regarding the budgets of the department of homeland security, which deals with immigration, and the departments of justice and interior. are held up over Trump's demand of $5 billion for the wall.

This would be the third shutdown under Mr. Trump's presidency, following two very brief shutdowns over the span of one month earlier this year. There are not the votes for the wall.

"President Trump should understand, there are not the votes for the wall in the House or the Senate", Schumer said on NBC News' Meet the Press.

The GOP would love to get those new, vulnerable Democrats on the record opposing a wall, but how a vote would be engineered is unclear.

"At stake is the issue of whether or not the United States remains a sovereign country", said Miller. The Democrat [sic.] Party has a simple choice, they can either choose to fight for America's working class, or to promote illegal immigration. "You can't do both".

Friday is the deadline to fund the government.

Congress already approved funding this year for about 75 percent of the government's discretionary account for the budget year that began October 1.

Britain's May will seek further assurances from European Union on Brexit backstop
In Brussels , European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said there was "no room whatsoever" for renegotiation of the deal. There were conflicting reports last night about the level of support among Conservative MPs for a no-confidence motion.

Trump said last week he would be "proud" to have a shutdown to get Congress to approve a $5 billion down payment to fulfill his campaign promise to build a border wall.

It found that 57 percent of Americans believe Trump should broker a compromise to prevent a shutdown, while 36 percent believe he should refuse to compromise. He urged Republicans to convince the president to back off of his demands for wall funding.

The aide noted that Republicans, who still control both houses of Congress until January 3, will not be able to muster the minimum 218 votes needed in the House to pass a funding bill if it contains Trump's demand for border wall money, which Democrats oppose. Before Mr. Trump took office, no shutdown had occurred when one party controlled the House, Senate and White House since the 1970s, when the federal government shut down under Jimmy Carter.

"As incoming House Judiciary chairman Jerry Nadler said recently, even if Trump is not convicted, impeachment 'may in fact be necessary and successful at saying, in effect, you have violated the constitutional order, you are threatening the constitutional order, you will stop threatening the constitutional order".

Before, during, and after his public debate with Pelosi and Schumer, Trump remained steadfast that border security is nonexistent without a physical structure.

When host Margaret Brennan asked if that meant shutting the government down, Miller said it did.

"If it comes down to it, absolutely" the administration is willing to shut down the government, Miller said on CBS's "Face the Nation". "I don't think he will, but for the good of the country, I hope he does". So I will take the mantle, ' he said. I will be the one to shut it down.

"I'm not going to negotiate the details on air with you right now", he told Brennan.
