Trump Talks Shutdown During Surprise Iraq Trip: Nancy Pelosi’s ‘Calling the Shots’

April FrancisDec 27, 2018

President Donald Trump argued Tuesday that federal workers support his position in the fight with Democrats over billions of dollars in funding for the border wall, four days into a partial government shutdown with no clear end in sight. They have said they'll swiftly pass legislation to re-open the government, but the party largely opposes construction of a wall. "It's a barrier from people pouring into the country, from drugs".

Trump also accused Democrats of wanting open borders, while claiming some federal workers are on his side.

"Many of those workers have said to me and communicated, stay out until you get the funding for the wall", said Trump. "As soon as I said, I want to build the wall, they were all against it". There is a problem in this world today called human trafficking ...

"We can't do it without a barrier. So we're going to have great wall there and we have other sections to give out".

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said Saturday that a physical barrier is off the option. "We can't do it without a wall".

And the shutdown. "I am all alone (poor me) in the White House waiting for the Democrats to come back and make a deal on desperately needed Border Security", he wrote in one of a series of Tweets he sent out on issues ranging Syria, North Korea and the wall and the shutdown.

"The American public is demanding a wall", Trump said while on the ground at Al Asad Air Base in Iraq.

The shutdown started Saturday after funding lapsed for nine Cabinet-level departments and dozens of agencies.

However, some 800,000 government workers are affected while some services that include parks and museums would be closed during the shutdown.

He adds that the shutdown has a dire impact on many NFFE employees living paycheck-to-paycheck. "The only one that doesn't want the wall are the Democrats". We are working so hard to catch these traffickers.

During his 2016 presidential campaign, Trump repeatedly promised Mexico would pay for his proposed wall. "It creates a real crisis for them to even have their pay shut off for short period of time", he says.

Despite the Christmas Eve plunge on Wall Street, President Trump said he had confidence in Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin on Tuesday, calling him "very talented". I've been at the White House.

The reference to 115 miles was unclear. He was supposed to spend Christmas at Mar-a-Lago with FLOTUS Melania Trump and their whole family but apparently, he can not join them due to the government problems that he needs to solve.

He compared that to Democrats' approach to former FBI Director James B. Comey, whom Democrats had excoriated in recent years, only to lionize him when he began to take on Mr. Trump. "But other than that, I wish everybody a merry Christmas".
