Trump Tells Democrats 'come Back from Vacation'

April FrancisJan 01, 2019

Democrats plan to put the ball back in Trump's court immediately on Thursday by passing a general spending bill which would allow the government to reopen fully, but would not include extra wall construction money, U.S. media reports said.

However, White House chief of staff John Kelly told the Los Angeles Times in an interview published Sunday that Trump abandoned the notion of "a solid concrete wall early on in the administration".

"To be honest, it's not a wall", Mr Kelly said, adding the mix of technological enhancements and "steel slat" barriers the president now wants along the border resulted from conversations with law enforcement professionals on the ground. "The president has said, he said last week, and he tweeted out pictures of steel slats".

Graham told CNN before his lunch with Trump that "there will never be a deal without wall funding".

Trump is not budging, having panned Democratic offers to keep money at current levels - $1.3 billion for border fencing, but not the wall.

Trump wants $5 billion in funding for a wall along the more than 2,000-mile border, which he says is now too porous to stop illegal immigration and which he claims has become a magnet for criminals, drugs and even terrorists. Lindsey Graham, who said he hoped to end the shutdown by offering Democrats incentives to get them to vote for wall funding.

"There may be a wall in some places".

Costello, indeed, believes Democrats are dug in on the border wall - and unlikely to cave.

According to a Democratic leadership aide, the legislation will include the full-year appropriations for six of the seven outstanding funding bills and stop-gap funding until February 8 for the Department of Homeland Security, which is where the fight over President Trump's demand for $5.7 billion in border wall funding is contained.

"If they can't do it before January 3, then we will do it", said Rep. Jim McGovern, D-Mass., incoming chairman of the Rules Committee. It did not supply the $5bn in funding for a wall that he has since demanded.

In a series of tweets on Monday, he urged Democrats need to return from vacation and give Republicans the votes necessary for border security.

Trump Talks Shutdown During Surprise Iraq Trip: Nancy Pelosi’s ‘Calling the Shots’
Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said Saturday that a physical barrier is off the option. "We can't do it without a wall". The shutdown started Saturday after funding lapsed for nine Cabinet-level departments and dozens of agencies.

After President Trump canceled his Christmas plans over the shutdown, his acting Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney announced he would be canceling his New Year's trip to Mar-a-Lago as well.

Building a solid "wall" along the 2,000-mile (3,200-kilometer) US-Mexico frontier was a central plank of Trump's 2016 election campaign, and he has tweeted about it nearly 100 times this year alone. He said it "will not be a legitimate answer to this impasse". "I wish it were not so", Alabama Sen.

Graham is specifically calling for helping young "Dreamer" immigrants remain in the well as another 400,000 people from countries struggling with natural disasters or armed conflicts.

The president Monday tweeted, "I'm in the Oval Office".

Schumer immediately began approaching Democratic senators after the midterm election to hear their views on Trump's $5 billion demand for the wall, according to a person familiar with the talks but unauthorized to speak publicly.

"Any deaths of children or others at the Border are strictly the fault of the Democrats and their pathetic immigration policies that allow people to make the long trek thinking they can enter our country illegally".

"And the most mysterious unexplainable part in all of this is why the president decided he would rather deal with House Democrats than House Republicans in order to avert, or get his way out of, a government shutdown". "Nancy Pelosi needs to come back from Hawaii - less hula, more moola for the DHS, Customs and Border Patrol, funding our border security".

"Less hula, more moola" for the Department of Homeland Security, she said. They return to Washington later this week.

As always, Trump is inclined to believe that he's winning whenever he's dominating discourse with his opinions and behavior, however odd and reprehensible they may seem.

House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi has vowed to pass legislation as soon as she takes the gavel, which is expected when the new Congress convenes, to reopen the nine shuttered departments and dozens of agencies now hit by the partial shutdown.

But even that may be hard without a compromise because the Senate will remain in Republican hands and Trump's signature will be needed to turn any bill into law. "But we've got to move away from the blame game".
