Roger Federer and Serena Williams meet with Switzerland winning at Hopman Cup

May JohnsonJan 02, 2019

The two will be facing off against each other at the Hopman Open on New Year's Day in a Mixed Doubles match.

Roger Federer and Serena Williams, two of the greatest tennis players of all time, found the ideal way to welcome in the new year.

Serena Williams and Roger Federer have been on the worldwide tennis circuit for decades - both are 37 years old - and they have won 43 Grand Slam titles between them.

Federer's sublime touch at the net proved decisive as he moved closer to a record third Hopman Cup title.

Federer and Belinda Bencic won 4-2, 4-3 (5-3) under the shorter Fast4 format against Williams and Frances Tiafoe.

Williams looked sluggish early in her singles match, and needed her left ankle re-strapped after winning the first set.

However, even a rare defeat couldn't take the gloss off the experience of facing Federer for the first, and nearly certainly the only, time.

"I hope a lot of tennis fans will tune in to watch the match, because it's going to be one time and probably never again in this kind of a competition", he explained. Serena, what a pleasure, what an honour.

"I admire everything she's done on and off the court, we are both fierce competitors and we always want to win", added the 20-time Grand Slam champion of the once-in-a-lifetime match.

"It was great fun, she is a great champion, you see how focussed and determined she is and I love that about her".

NHK footage showed the van with a smashed front and paramedics carrying the injured on stretchers into ambulances. The Japanese news outlet stated in its report that is unclear to which execution the suspect was referring.

Federer wasn't at his absolute best but still dispatched Tiafoe in under an hour to reinforce his claims on a remarkable third straight Australian Open title and seventh overall. After that slip, Williams took the next two sets.

Federer felt he handled Tiafoe's power game well.

"The good thing is I've played him a little bit already", Federer said.

Williams also admitted she was hell-bent on getting a selfie with Federer to share with her 10.3 million Instagram followers.

It was an exhibition match and while the two didn't take it lightly, it's clear they had a ton of fun while representing their countries.

Williams forged ahead to take a 4-1 lead in her singles encounter with Bencic, but the Swiss battled back to take the first set 6-4.

"It was such a quick turnaround (from yesterday's match)", Williams said.

"I really can not imagine how".

If Switzerland beats Greece on Thursday they will be through to the final, where they will defend the title they won a year ago.
