Suspicious packages found at embassies in Australia

He was apprehended last night at his home, with images obtained by 9News showing police in hazmat gear assessing the suspect's home.

Officers have so far recovered 29 of the packages, with forensic testing now underway to determine the exact substance in them.

Some packages were reported to be labelled asbestos.

The maximum penalty for the offence is 10 years imprisonment.

The packages were not believed to be unsafe, but police, fire crews and forensic teams were urged to use breathing apparatus as they documented and double- or triple-bagged the materials for further testing.

A 48-year-old from northern Victoria has been arrested and charged over dozens of suspicious packages that were delivered to embassies and consulates throughout Australia.

Police said they have identified all the intended recipients and have put procedures in place to recover the outstanding packages.

There was no ongoing threat to the public, authorities said.

It came two days after Sydney's Argentinian consulate was partially evacuated following reports of a suspicious substance.

At least two consulates in Melbourne did not contact authorities about packages until they received an email from the Australian government.

An official from the Greek consulate told SBS Greek radio they first became suspicious due to the lack of return address.

Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement that the matter had been referred to the Australian Federal Police, as well as Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT).

It subsequently sent similar advice to missions elsewhere.
