Here's how the Oscars made history with today's nominations

Lydia FlemingJan 23, 2019

Nominations for the 91st annual Academy Awards were announced this Tuesday morning and while the list includes most of the expected contenders, there are some big names who won't be reporting to the Dolby Theatre next month.

Netflix must be celebrating today, with not only "Roma" pulling in 10 nominations but the Coen brothers receiving a nod for penning their anthology western film.

Among the movies nominated for best picture, "Black Panther" stands out as a nod to Hollywood's present, representing the first superhero movie and Marvel title to gain such recognition.

As Mexico's official Oscar entry, "Roma" could also make history by being the first foreign-language film to go on to win best picture. Since Lee was nominated for that film, it's nearly forgivable that Oscar voters failed to recognize John David Washington and Topher Grace for their acting efforts. Joel Edgerton also missed out on Best Director for Boy Erased.

Take Spike Lee, who has finally got his first best director nod for BlacKkKlansman after three decades of incendiary, albeit erratic brilliance.

Rafael Nadal vs Frances Tiafoe, Australian Open 2019
However he performs, it has been a breakthrough week for Tiafoe , who will hopefully have a huge future ahead of him in the game. He sat out the 2018 French Open and suffered defeats at Wimbledon (quarterfinals) and the U.S.

'Won't You Be My Neighbor' or at least give me a nomination?

Oscar victor Lupita Nyong'o, who stars in the film, posted footage on Twitter of the cast celebrating when excerpts from the film premiered at San Diego Comic-Con. While Cooper received nominations in the best actor and best picture categories, it would've been nice to see him recognized for impressively directing his first feature film. Aparicio became the first indigenous woman to be nominated for lead actress, and just the second Mexican actress to be recognized in that category.

Meanwhile, "Vice" supporting actress Amy Adams remains on Close's heels in the unusual race by landing her sixth Oscar nomination. She's also Marvel's first-ever female production designer. "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "A Star Is Born" both contributed in a big way with $202 million and $205 million, respectively in the States.

Though many expected "A Star Is Born", Bradley Cooper's tear-inducing revival of one of Hollywood's most oft-remade show-business myths, to top the nominations, Cooper was surprisingly overlooked as director and the academy instead put its fullest support behind a pair of indies by global directors. The "Taxi Driver" writer was awarded his first-ever nomination for his work on the religious drama starring Ethan Hawke.

The "A Star Is Born" actress and musician was recognized as a lead actress and for the song "Shallow", which she co-wrote with Anthony Rossomando, Andrew Wyatt and Mark Ronson. This is the year we could get #JusticeForSpike, the year a weird lady-led historical drama about gossip could win big, the year we're nearly guaranteed another magnificent Regina King speech, the Year Of Black Panther, the year the Academy finally embraced the future of film.
