Michael Cohen says he's postponing testimony over threats by Trump

April FrancisJan 28, 2019

"Mr. Cohen volunteered to testify before the House Oversight Committee on February 7th", the statement said.

It is not clear to which "threats" Davis was referring, and Davis declined to provide more detail. But Trump and Giuliani have publicly urged the Justice Department to investigate Cohen's father-in-law, insinuating he was part of some unspecific criminal activity.

"I was aware, I think most people were aware of the tweet, 'watch father-in-law, ' but it's one of a bundle of tweets that you get sick of looking at that the president issues multiple times a day", Barnicle said.

There is a certain amount of ambiguity in Trump's statements, leaving wiggle room for his defenders to say he was not making threats but blowing off steam. "He has other clients also, I assume, and he doesn't want to tell the truth for me or other of his clients".

Respected figures across party lines also responded to Trump's tweets on the social media platform. The president has denied their claims.

Since those payments were meant to help the president's chances of winning the 2016 election, they should have been reported on his campaign finance reports, prosecutors argued in their case against Cohen.

A source told CNN on Wednesday that Cohen's wife and father-in-law feel threatened by comments by the President and Giuliani, Trump's attorney. They have pledged to limit their questioning to avoid interfering with any investigations.

President Donald Trump's lawyer-spokesman Rudy Giuliani and a disputed Buzzfeed News report have muddied the waters on exactly how long negotiations over the project went on.

- December 12, 2018: Cohen is sentenced to three years in prison.

Democrats have suggested they may subpoena Cohen to compel his testimony and the committee's chairman, Rep. Elijah Cummings, said Cohen could be brought from prison to appear before Congress.

Despite a report Tuesday night, the legal team member said Trump wasn't "apoplectic" about Giuliani's statement and ensuing cleanup.

Cohen was expected to appear before the U.S. House of Representatives Oversight Committee.

Davis also says Cohen has received threats. The President should make no statement or take any action to obstruct Congress' independent oversight and investigative efforts, including by seeking to discourage any witness from testifying in response to a duly authorized request from Congress.

But the lawmakers said they would not "let the President's tactics prevent Congress" from getting to the truth.

Cohen said he lied because Trump had asked him to do so and because Cohen wanted his testimony to be consistent with Trump's public campaign narrative that he had no business dealings in Russian Federation.

Last month, he entered a guilty plea for lying to Congress about the timing and discussions about a proposed Trump Tower building in Moscow that was under consideration during the campaign. Prior to this weekend at least, Trump had backed Giuliani because he understood the collusion story to be a "messaging battle, and Rudy much of the time has been a very effective messenger", according to a White House aide speaking to Politico.
