Trump Says No Final Deal With China Until He Meets President Xi

That dispute was put on hold for 90 days starting December 1 after U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping met and agreed to halt additional tariffs as both sides ironed out their trade differences.

The next round of US-China trade talks will resume Wednesday and Thursday in Washington to try to find a way out of the tariff battle between the two powers. He then added: "Tariffs on China increase to 25% on March 1st, so all working hard to complete by that date!"

But US officials insist the trade talks and Huawei prosecutions are not related.

President Trump said Thursday that he believes the fine points of a trade deal with China will ultimately be negotiated directly between himself and Xi Jinping.

"China's top trade negotiators are in the United States meeting with our representatives".

Moreover, a new complication injected itself into US-China relations on the eve of the talks when the Justice Department brought criminal charges Monday against the Chinese tech giant Huawei, accusing it of stealing technology secrets and violating sanctions against Iran.

Trump, meanwhile, has seen his public approval ratings battered by the partial government shutdown and is said to worry about the tariff war's impact upon US financial markets. According to him, without that, the deal would be unacceptable.

A new round of high-level talks of China and United States was held on Wednesday morning in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building of White House, Washington D.C.

Trump's steel and aluminum tariffs affect most countries, including China, with the notable exceptions of Argentina and Australia. "All of the many problems are being discussed and will be hopefully resolved", he wrote.

The talks began two days after the United States charged Chinese telecommunications company Huawei Technologies Co Ltd and its chief financial officer, Meng Wanzhou, with conspiring to violate US sanctions on Iran by doing business through a subsidiary it tried to hide.

He is expected to meet with the Chinese delegation later Thursday. China has retaliated with tariffs of its own, but has suspended some and is allowing some purchases of US soybeans during the talks.

US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Chinese Vice Premier Liu He will lead the trade meetings, joined by White House economic advisor Larry Kudlow and Mnuchin. Both sides agreed to start talks on reforms with respect to forced technology transfer, intellectual property protection, non-tariff barriers, cyber intrusions and cyber theft, and opening the Chinese market to USA services and agriculture.

The Trump administration has imposed tariffs on $250 billion in Chinese imports, reported NPR.

If a deal is not reached by March 2, US tariffs will rise from 10 percent to 25 percent.

Chinese officials deny that they force USA companies to transfer technology.

Last year, United States sanctions on another Chinese telecoms company, ZTE, sent waves through the trade negotiations, which produced no breakthrough. "Those are separate issues", Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin told USA media ahead of the talks.
