Kamala Harris Says Marijuana 'Brings People Joy'

April FrancisFeb 15, 2019

Narrator: So did Bill Clinton.

Marijuana is now legal in 10 states, while a total of 33 states have legalized the drug for medicinal use.

With an increasingly-crowded Democratic primary looming ahead in 2020, Harris may be anxious her mainstream media support isn't enough to carry her to the general, especially with the controversies surrounding her pre-congressional law-and-order record as California's Attorney General.

In an interview with The Breakfast Club hosts DJ Envy and Charlamagne Tha God that aired Monday, the show's hosts asked the California Democrat to respond to a series of disparaging memes that have been circulated on social media.

And yes, she did inhale ...

"That's not true. And look I joke about it, half joking - half my family's from Jamaica, are you kidding me", Harris replies, laughing.

Senator Kamala Harris (D-CA) announced on Monday that she supports the effort to legalize marijuana at the federal level. "And I did inhale!" she enthusiastically added. "It was a long time ago but yes". This is not new to us and so I think that we know what they are trying to do.

After she discussed her support for legalization and outlined some of her remaining concerns, the host asked Harris whether she's ever used cannabis. When will we see a major-party candidate admit to toking up in the recent past?

Jody Wilson-Raybould resigns from Trudeau's cabinet
Tuesday night support started to stream in on social media for Wilson Raybould, including from some of her Liberal colleagues. Many were puzzled by the fact that the Prime Minister never clearly explained what she had done to deserve the demotion.

"And we need to research, which is one of the reasons why we need to legalize it".

The topic came up as part of a more serious discussion on Harris' authentic blackness.

"Maybe Senator Harris should do that and she wouldn't be chuckling about joy", Christie added. "So we have got to recognize that and give people a lift up". "I was born black".

The senator's immediate family is now multiracial: Her husband of five years, San Francisco attorney Douglas Emhoff, is white. "I love my country, and this is a moment in time that I feel a sense of responsibility to fight for the best of who we are", said Harris. "And that's it - and he loves me".

Chalk that one up to people having too much time on their hands. Last year, Harris supported fellow 2020 candidate Sen.

And she answered another question on everyone's mind. Attacking her over her choice of spouse is low even by today's eroding standards of political discourse. There's apparently a meme out there that states that Kamala Harris as a prosecutor "set a state record" for prosecuting black men. She said she supports it. The death penalty episode shows the tricky crosscurrents that she has had to weather - and that are likely to intensify as she tries to square that circle.

She endorsed the policy in her latest book, and being a former prosecutor, has seen the ways that the drug war has selectively destroyed people's lives and freedom over a substance that is no more risky than alcohol - often enforced in racially biased ways.
