Bernie Sanders to run for United States president in 2020

April FrancisFeb 20, 2019

Mr Sanders described his new White House bid as a "continuation of what we did in 2016", noting that policies he advocated for then are now embraced by the Democratic Party.

The 2020 Democratic presidential primary will be the first time more than one woman has competed for the party's nomination.

Sanders, who was the runner-up for the Democratic presidential nomination in the 2016 election, is poised to run a campaign that focuses largely on grassroots work from his supporters. Still, there is no question that Sanders will be a strong contender for the Democratic nomination. The primary field will also be more racially diverse and, on average, younger. Elizabeth Warren, another progressive populist, who announced the formation of an exploratory committee on New Year's Eve and formally declared her candidacy 10 days ago.

This is a developing story. In early polls of Iowa and New Hampshire, where he won 50 per cent and 60 per cent of the vote, support for the senator from Vermont has ranged from the low teens to 30 per cent. "It's easy to come on board when things are popular".

In the run-up to Sanders' 2020 announcement, persistent allegations emerged of sexual harassment of women by male staffers during his 2016 campaign. He built campaign operations in every primary and caucus state.

After graduating, Mr Sanders worked on an Israeli kibbutz and moved to Vermont, where he worked as a carpenter and filmmaker.

Shortly after Senator Bernie Sanders suffered a crushing loss in South Carolina's Democratic primary in 2016, his campaign's African-American outreach team sent a memo to top campaign leaders with an urgent warning. An aide told CNN in January that the process was already underway.

Asked byCBS Newsin a separate interview that will air Tuesday what would be different in 2020 compared to 2016, Sanders said: "We're going to win".

But the three-term senator is now entering a field already crowded with several high-profile candidates - including five other senators - but no clear favorite.

California Sen. Kamala (KAH'-mah-lah) Harris reported raising $1.5 million in the 24 hours after she launched her campaign last month. While she ultimately became the party's nominee, his campaign helped lay the groundwork for the leftward lurch that has dominated Democratic politics in the Trump era. By the end, Sanders had proved to be a national political force, amassing an army of loyal followers and unprecedented amounts of small-donor fundraising money.

His announcement was play on Corbyn's slogan "For the many, not the few".

Presumably the younger Democratic rivals of Biden and Sanders will bring up the age issue indirectly by drawing attention to their own relative youth and/or their appeal to younger voters (though it will be tough for any of them to do better among younger voters than Sanders did in 2016). Senator Sanders, who had never actually joined the party, began to take a bigger role in shaping it.

"Our bill does what the American people want", Sanders said in a statement ahead of the rollout, "by substantially increasing the estate tax on the wealthiest families in this country and dramatically reducing wealth inequality".
