Michael Cohen to testify before House Oversight panel next week

April FrancisFeb 22, 2019

The start date for Michael Cohen's three-year prison stay has been delayed for two months, after President Trump's former personal attorney asked for more time to recuperate from surgery. Cohen tweeted late on Wednesday, linking to a fundraising effort for his legal fees.

"I am pleased to announce that Michael Cohen's public testimony before the Oversight Committee is back on, despite efforts by some to intimidate his family members and prevent him from appearing", Cummings said.

Jordan charged that Cohen was invited "just to satisfy Tom Steyer", - a billionaire Democrat who is funding a campaign to impeach Trump - "and other political forces on the left".

In August, Cohen admitted he made illegal campaign contributions at the behest of Trump and pleaded guilty to campaign finance violations in connection with the hush-money payments.

Cohen also will appear at a closed-door hearing on Thursday next week before the House Intelligence Committee, now led by Adam Schiff, a Democratic critic of Trump.

Bernie Sanders to run for United States president in 2020
After graduating, Mr Sanders worked on an Israeli kibbutz and moved to Vermont, where he worked as a carpenter and filmmaker. The 2020 Democratic presidential primary will be the first time more than one woman has competed for the party's nomination.

Cohen was previously scheduled to enter prison on March 6 to serve his three-year sentence for campaign finance violations, lying to Congress and tax and bank fraud. They noted prosecutors did not object to the one-time extension. Cohen will report to prison in May for crimes related to those payments.

Cohen told lawmakers in 2017 that he had abandoned a Trump business proposal in Moscow in January 2016, but he later acknowledged he continued pursuing it for months after that.

After the delay request was granted, Monico and fellow Cohen lawyers Barry Spevack and Lanny Davis issued a statement saying the extra time will allow Cohen to "prepare for the expected testimony next week before congressional committees, which he welcomes".

Cohen's congressional testimony "will require Mr. Cohen to spend substantial time in preparation that will limit the time he has to get his affairs in order and spend time with his family, especially given such a short period between the anticipated hearings and the present reporting date", Monico wrote.

The scheduled public hearing sets the stage for what is expected to be one of the most high profile congressional testimonies in history, although Cohen will not talk about matters related Special Counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation probe or an ongoing investigation by federal prosecutors in New York, Cohen's lawyer, Lanny Davis said last week.
