Trump Blames Cohen Hearing for Failure of North Korea Summit

Oscar PerryMar 05, 2019

The summit ended abruptly and ahead of schedule on Thursday, without agreement, despite hopes both sides might make progress on North Korea's denuclearization and the easing of sanctions on Pyongyang. He strongly implied Trump committed crimes while president, leading Democrats to call for more investigations.

"I never think it is helpful to have-I don't care what president's in office-to have contentious hearings like that when there is some serious negotiations happening overseas", Rogers said.

A day after the summit, he said in a speech that South Korea will negotiate with the USA on ways to restart the frozen joint projects north of the border - a mountain resort and a factory park where South Korean firms used North Korean labor to produce goods.

Bolton also sought to explain Trump's comments about taking Kim's word about Otto Warmbier, the American college student who was held prisoner in North Korea and was sent home in a vegetative state and later died. He deepened his relationship with Kim Jong Un.

"He's not desperate for a deal, not with North Korea, not with anybody if it's contrary to American national interests", Bolton said.

According to senior United States officials, in the week leading up to the Hanoi summit the North Koreans had demanded the lifting of effectively all the UN Security Council economic sanctions imposed on Pyongyang since March 2016.

Earlier in the interview with CNN, Rogers also took issue with Trump's insistence that the House Oversight and Reform Committee's decision to schedule a hearing with his former lawyer Michael Cohen had interfered with the global summit.

"We honestly didn't know (what North Korea would bring to the table)".

Rand Paul is the latest GOP lawmaker to say he can't go along with the White House on the emergency declaration . Paul did not address whether he believes the crisis at the border is a national emergency.

At the meeting, South Korea's Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha said the proposed talks, which could include civilian experts from the US and South Korea, would help settle differences over how much sanctions relief Washington should provide to North Korea in exchange for nuclear disarmament steps.

Hwang, a former justice minister under former President Park Geun-hye, said Moon should "return" to strengthening national security.

House Democrats arranged for Cohen to testify before an oversight committee.

"This the result of a president who is not prepared for these kind of negotiations, a staff that is not well-prepared and that is essentially flying by the seat of its trousers", Schiff said on Face the Nation.

Yongbyon, long at the heart of the reclusive state's nuclear program, has seen its importance drop in recent years as North Korea turned to other secret facilities to produce fissile material for bombs and missiles that could carry a warhead to the USA mainland. "I don't view it as a failure at all when American national interests are protected", Bolton added.

The national security advisor said that the next steps weren't clear, but that the USA would continue the "maximum pressure campaign", while admitting that North Korea continued to produce nuclear materials.

Washington and Seoul have traditionally held the exercises every spring to test military readiness in case tensions with North Korea should boil over.

Under U.S. laws, Trump would need to go through an involved process to soften U.S. unilateral sanctions against the North, which would put South Korean companies doing business in the North under the threat of U.S. boycotts. -South Korea joint exercises as aggressive provocation and rehearsals for war.
