$1.5 billion US Mega Millions jackpot claimed in South Carolina

April FrancisMar 06, 2019

The person who won $1.5 billion in a Mega Millions drawing previous year has finally stepped forward to claim their prize over four months after the drawing.

The South Carolina lottery said Monday that the victor had claimed October's jackpot but elected to remain anonymous.

The victor, who has elected to remain anonymous, chose the one-time payment cash option, making their prize worth almost $878,000,000. The total jackpot is the largest ever to a single victor in USA history. The victor allowed a fellow customer to make a Mega Millions lottery ticket purchase in front of the victor while in line at the store, the commission said.

The numbers drawn on October 23 were 5, 28, 62, 65, 70 and Mega Ball 5.

But the cash option payment chosen by the South Carolina Mega Millions victor amounts to a lump-sum total of US$877,784,124 - the largest jackpot payout to a single victor in USA history, the state lottery commission said.

Who was the lucky victor of a $1.5 billion jackpot?

Their mediocre season is being attributed to the departure of their talismanic No.7, Cristiano Ronaldo. They scored with their first shot on goal, and then with their second shot on goal.

"A simple act of kindness led to an incredible outcome", the commission said.

It was quite possibly the biggest lottery mystery in SC history. That's because Patel gets a $50,000 payment for selling the winning ticket - something he wouldn't have gotten if the prize went unclaimed.

Inside Edition went to Simpsonville, South Carolina, where the ticket was purchased, to ask around about the mysterious victor. A couple, Marvin and Mae Acosta, from California waited six months before claiming their share of the winnings.

"We are delighted that the victor is a South Carolinian and has come forward to claim this remarkable prize", Hogan Brown, executive director of the South Carolina Lottery Commission, said. Some thought the victor was so overwhelmed at seeing the winning numbers pop up that he or she died on the spot. The state collected $61 million in income taxes from the victor.

Time nearly ran out for the victor to take home the big bucks, since they only had 180 days from the draw date to claim it.

The prize being claimed does come with other benefits for the state and the shop that sold it.
