Ilhan Omar's Criticism Raises the Question: Is Aipac Too Powerful?

April FrancisMar 11, 2019

It was the Democratic leader's latest attempt to quell tension that erupted earlier this month when Omar said she wanted to start a discussion about "allegiance to a foreign country" in reference to Israel.

Most Democrats were too soft on her while Republicans were so heavy handed they almost elevated Omar to martyr status.

Pelosi, along with House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, reportedly drafted a resolution over the weekend condemning anti-Semitism that did not mention Omar, but was seen as an indirect rebuke of the congresswoman.

Republicans generally joined in the favorable vote, though almost two-dozen opposed the measure, one calling it a "sham". And with this power, she made a decision to place a doltish hater of Jews, someone with radical positions and absolutely no relevant experience, on the House Foreign Affairs Committee to appease the growing anti-Israel contingent in her party. Omar, a Somali-American, and fellow Muslims Rashida Tlaib of MI and Andrew Carson of IN, issued a statement praising the "historic" vote as the first resolution to condemn "anti-Muslim bigotry".

And so, on Thursday, 23 Republican lawmakers galaxy-brained themselves into botching what should have been the easiest vote of their careers in Congress. "But the fact is if that's how it was interpreted, we have to remove all doubt, as we have done over and over again". "So others came to a different conclusion based off of the means of assembling this resolution".

"The change that is happening in the Democratic party is something that started with the recent elections that brought Ilhan Omar and others - young, progressive, and pushing for new ideas", US-Palestinian journalist Ramzy Baroud told RT. "We are proud of the strong and unanimous position taken by House Democrats to condemn anti-Semitism and hatred in all its forms, and note that it was Republicans who were divided in their vote", her statement concluded.

Rep. John Larson D-1st District, said the vote on the resolution was "common sense". Some proposed two separate resolutions. I think we deserved it.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi says that Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., wasn't being intentionally anti-Semitic, but she's usually pretty dead certain that President Trump's motives for his speech are the worst.

On Friday, she double down, saying, "I don't think our colleague is anti-Semitic" but that she "didn't realize" that her words were "fraught with meaning". "Instead, they put a resolution on the floor which she then went out and said, 'This is a tremendous victory for me, '" Cheney said. Last week, Omar received bipartisan blowback for suggesting pro-Israel organizations pressure lawmakers into pledging allegiance to a foreign country.

The remarks drew a swift backlash from both Democrats and Republicans who noted the long and ugly history of accusing Jews and other religious minorities of holding a "dual loyalty" to their country and their religion.

Radio Sputnik's Loud and Clear spoke with Ariel Gold, peace activist and co-director of Codepink, about the resolution and the movement behind Omar. Andre Carson, D-Ind., and Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., calling the vote "historic on many fronts" for denouncing "all forms of bigotry". If the anti-Semitism is coming from perceived allies, better to ignore it. The New York Times admitted as much back in October, when they acknowledged that they had undercovered hate crimes in the city because "bias stemming from longstanding ethnic tensions in the city presents complexities that many liberals have chosen simply to ignore".

Republicans, even those who voted for the resolution, criticized that it had been expanded to take the focus off anti-Semitism - and Omar.
