Gatland reveals Ireland game was on Wales players’ minds during Scotland win

May JohnsonMar 13, 2019

Wales stayed on course for the Six Nations top honour with a distructive 18-11 victory in Edinburgh.

It was made to work for its 11-18 victory though, with a depleted Scotland side left disappointed not to have made the most of a chaotic second period in which Wales failed to score until the last minute.

Gilchrist was held up over the line by Parkes, and then a rolling maul drew in the Welsh defense, a Finn Russell inside pass to Byron McGuigan put the replacement wing in space, and replacement fullback Adam Hastings sent Graham diving into the right corner.

Scotland kicked off this Guinness Six Nations with an efficient home win over Italy and then produced a vibrant first half against Ireland.

Replacement Hamish Watson was to the fore in the Scottish comeback, bringing some of the carrying power that Scotland had lacked in the first half with a series of bruising charges.

Any team that's won a Grand Slam - and I think back even to past year with Ireland and that Johnny Sexton drop goal - you look back at certain games and know you've had a little bit of luck.

"I'll take my hat off to the players in how they've dug deep", said Gatland.

The former Ireland coach praised his players for the resilience they showed at the end of their hard week and for a superb second-half defensive effort helping them to protect most of the advantage they gained through first-half tries from winger Josh Adams and centre Jonathan Davies. "This group have forgotten how to lose and hopefully that continues next week".

"Scotland played well and their bench was good, so you have to give them credit". Wales' renowned defense bent but didn't break, having to make 138 tackles in the second half after 66 in the first.

"When you look back on a Grand Slam there is always one game you think was close and that was probably today".

Wales may be without Liam Williams for the Principality clash after the full-back left the pitch before half-time with a shoulder injury.

Scotland meanwhile face the prospect of ending a disappointing campaign with a solitary win unless they can inflict a shock defeat against England in their final fixture.

"I think [there were] five in the 22 that should normally lead to yellow cards with that pressure, but obviously we are very frustrated that didn't happen".
