Democrat Beto O'Rourke announces run for president in 2020

April FrancisMar 15, 2019

The son of a powerful El Paso, Texas politician, O'Rourke won election to the El Paso City Council in 2005 and served there until his election to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2012. "I don't see how we're able to meet any of the fundamental challenges that we have as a country without, in part, harnessing the power of the market".

"O'Rourke was good at rallying liberals across the country who wanted to defeat Sen".

Pundits and politicos had questioned whether O'Rourke had waited too long to announce his candidacy, and some criticized him for feeling blue after his heart-wrenching loss to Republican incumbent Ted Cruz.

He got within three percentage points of upsetting Mr Cruz in the nation's largest red state and shattered national fundraising records while using grassroots organising and social media savvy to mobilise young voters and minorities.

"So if I were to run, I think it's just so important that those who would comprise my team looked like this country".

Rep. Beto O'Rourke, D-Texas, was asked specifically about a recent decision by California Gov. Gavin Newsom to sign an executive order halting executions for 737 death row inmates.

Former congressman Beto O'Rourke is running for president.

Rain, strong winds expected around the GTA Sunday
Wednesday will continue windy and showery with strong northwest winds, which will ease later in the day and on Wednesday night. Freezing rain warnings are issued when rain falling in sub-zero temperatures creates ice build-up and icy surfaces.

The Texas Democrat, who has publicly mulled a run for months, confirmed his plans in a text to KTSM. While O'Rourke lost his Senate bid, the race vaulted him into the national spotlight.

"I'm all ears. There's no sense in campaigning if you already know every single answer ... that's what brought me here", he said.

Democratic operatives in states with early presidential primaries, including SC and Nevada, have formed Draft Beto groups that spent months fundraising, lining up potential O'Rourke endorsements and building campaign infrastructure until their candidate was ready.

Some had encouraged O'Rourke to make another run at the Senate again, challenging Republican Sen. Former Vice President Joe Biden is also expected to announce his intentions soon.

O'Rourke outlined challenges facing the United States, from immigration to climate change, saying, "The foundational challenge to get all of this done, is to fix our democracy".

It wasn't the first time O'Rourke generated national attention for taking on Trump.
