New Zealand mosque attack death toll rises to 50

Tarrant, who was not granted name suppression, smirked to the camera of the media dock and frequently scanned the court room which was closed to the public.

Instead, the accused smirked at media persons present and swayed while the charges were read out.

The man charged with murder over the attack, 28-year-old Brenton Tarrant, grew up in Grafton NSW and posted a rambling 74-page document online before the attack, saying he hoped to create fear.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says she expects formal recognition for the two rural community cops who apprehended alleged mosque murderer Brenton Tarrant. While he allowed media persons to take photographs and film the proceedings, he ordered that Tarrant's face be pixelated as his identity might be a part of the court case.

A man who stood outside a Manchester mosque after the shooting of 49 people at mosques in New Zealand said he wanted to "respond with friendship".

Before Friday's attack, New Zealand's deadliest shooting in modern history took place in 1990 in the small town of Aramoana, where a gunman killed 13 people following a dispute with a neighbour.

The massacre was described as an "act of terror brought to our shores and rained down upon us" by New Zealand Prime Minister Ardern, as the Australian gunman fronted court over the attack.

Prime Minister Ardern has stressed that families that lost a loved one - particularly if he/she was a breadwinner - would be provided financial support by the government.

New Zealand authorities are working quickly to move all the bodies out of the mosques and through the coroner's office so they can be returned to their loved ones.

At least 48 people were wounded, some critically. He also apparently smirked at photographers, according to the New Zealand Herald.

"He always seemed to embody the philosophies of the fitness industry which is that we are inclusive and we accept all shapes of sizes and all fitness abilities and we are here to help and improve and help people", she said.

Two other people have been arrested in connection with the terror attack, and they remain in custody as police conduct an ongoing investigation as to their possible involvement.

"It's a fine line between telling the children this is the reality of it", he said, "and not exposing them to the true nature of humanity that can lead to this sort of thing". Anyone can use a pistol if they are on the range of an incorporated pistol club that is recognised [sic] by the Commissioner of Police, and under the immediate supervision of a licence [sic] holder with a B endorsement.

New Zealand Rugby spokesman Nigel Cass said the decision to cancel Saturday's game in Dunedin was made after an urgent meeting involving both teams, venue management and police.

The main suspect, who obtained a gun license in November 2017, used two semi-automatic weapons, two shotguns and a lever-action firearm in the attacks, Ardern said. At least one Palestinian died, Palestine's ambassador to Australia and New Zealand said in a statement.

Ms Ardern said she would be reviewing events leading up to the attack to see how the suspect went unnoticed by authorities.

New Zealand, with a population of 5 million, has relatively loose gun laws and an estimated 1.5 million firearms, or roughly one for every three people.
