Senate shuns Green New Deal amid claims of bad faith

April FrancisMar 29, 2019

Yesterday, the Senate failed to advance the Green New Deal, proposed by Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

The Senate turned away from the Green New Deal on Tuesday as both parties shunned an opportunity to debate a comprehensive climate change plan offered by Democrats. Kamala Harris of California, Cory Booker of New Jersey, Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota and Kirsten Gillibrand of NY - all candidates for the Democratic nomination who have endorsed the Green New Deal - voted "present" Tuesday. Republicans won over Democratic Senators Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema and one independent senator, Angus King, who usually votes with the Democrats. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) scheduled the vote to show how little support the Senate has for the Green New Deal.

Schumer blasted McConnell for scheduling a "sham" vote on the Green New Deal right before members of the upper chamber will vote on a funding package for disaster relief, arguing climate change and natural disasters are unquestionably related. Lamar Alexander said on the Senate floor Monday.

Ocasio-Cortez in a House committee hearing said, "As towns and cities go underwater, as wildfires ravage our communities, we're going to pay".

The GOP-controlled Senate pushed for a procedural vote to put Democrats on the record about the progressive-backed, non-binding resolution that seeks to cut all greenhouse gas emissions in a decade and create a government jobs program.

In an interview with TIME, Ocasio-Cortez expressed frustration with critics who have picked apart the resolution. Democrat activists have championed it as a necessary policy to combat the deadly issue of climate change.

Republicans forced the vote, in which all 53 Republicans voted against the motion.

- Appalachian Citizens' Law Center (@AppCitizensLaw) March 27, 2019Hey @AOC if you come to Kentucky to tour a coal mine we'd love for you to come on @WKYT to discuss the Green New Deal! Another poll found that 43 percent of Americans said they are less likely to vote for a candidate who backs the Green New Deal, compared to 30 percent who said they are more likely to do so.

In his 13-minute speech, the conservative senator accused the resolution of lacking a "single serious idea", before going on to mischaracterize its main goals as the "elimination of all airplanes" and the "elimination of all cows", referring to a jokey line in a "frequently asked questions" document by Ocasio-Cortez's office. Ed Markey, D-Mass., called for a complete transition to renewable energy by 2030. "I believe human emissions are a major cause of climate change", said Sen.

Ocasio-Cortez tore into Lee on Twitter, saying, "If this guy can be Senator, you can do anything".

But Democrats blasted McConnell, who can unilaterally decide which bills and amendments are considered for floor votes, for holding the Green New Deal vote without any hearings and for attempting to stymie debate on climate change.

It turns out that Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's Green New Deal (GND) isn't so popular after all.

"Later today, the American people will see which of their senators can do the common-sense thing and vote "no" on this destructive socialist daydream", McConnell wrote.
