Why Were Charges Against Jessie Smollett Dropped?

Lydia FlemingMar 29, 2019

Actor Jussie Smollett leaves court after charges against him were dropped by state prosecutors in Chicago, Illinois, U.S. March 26, 2019.

Smollett allegedly faked a hate crime and had been indicted on 16 counts of filing a false police report.

IL prosecutor Joe Magats said the charges were dropped because Jussie forfeited a $10,000 (£7,600) bond payment and carried out community service. "Based on all facts and circumstances of the case, and also keeping in mind resources and keeping in mind that the office's number one priority is to combat violent crime and the drivers of violence, I chose to offer this disposition in the case", Joseph Magats said. Smollett said two masked men shouted racial and anti-gay slurs, poured bleach on him, beat him and tied a rope around his neck.

On Tuesday, the IL state attorney's office suddenly dropped the charges and his record was wiped clean, his lawyers said.

The two brothers were initially drawn into the investigation after police released grainy images of two "persons of interest" in the area the night of the attack.

"The state's attorney's office is saying he's not exonerated, he actually did commit this hoax". Law enforcement will now not be able to acknowledge that Mr. Smollett was indicted and charged with these awful crimes and the full record of what occurred will be forever hidden from public view.

Democrats fail to overturn Trump's emergency
The president then declared the emergency, vowing to divert funds from other accounts for the wall. Trump tweeted after the House vote on Tuesday, saying "BIG WIN today on the boarder".

Last month, police announced that they had turned against Smollett upon discovering evidence that suggested the Empire actor had paid the Osundairo brothers to attack him.

Emanuel said Chicago taxpayers "put a lot of resources" into the police investigation, because "we take the issue of a hate crime in our city" seriously. "The facts are clear", Holmes said in a statement.

They do, however, shed light on investigators' interactions with the brothers investigators say participated in staging the attack.

Chicago police released a portion of their investigative reports on Wednesday, but said there will be no more information to come.

When pushed on what incentive brothers had to stage the attacked, Schmidt said, "If you're friends, and I'm saying "Hey, I'm going to pay you for training, I'm also asking you to do me a favor" ... and the favor was to stage the attack". After leaving the hearing - which would have happened in secrecy if not for a last-minute media tipoff by a publicist - the actor even boasted he'd been "truthful and consistent from day one" and thanked the state for "attempting to do what's right" by dropping the charges.
