Tiger falls to Bjerregaard, Oosthuizen beaten in Austin

May JohnsonApr 01, 2019

Tiger Woods missed what many would consider an easy putt on Saturday in windy conditions in the WGC-Dell Match Play Championship at the Austin Country Club in Texas, ending his run in the event.

Woods had beaten Rory McIlroy 2&1 in their first match play meeting in the last 16 but Bjerregaard completed a 1-up victory over the former world number one when the American missed a short putt on the 18th hole. Needing to defeat Cantlay to move on, Tiger was down two after eight holes.

"I played pretty consistent the entire day", Woods said.

But Woods missed a golden opportunity to go 3 up on the sixth hole when he missed a 6-foot birdie putt, two other putts inside 5 feet and let Bjerregaard - whose biggest victory was last year's Dunhill Links Championship in Scotland - hang around. Although they've never competed at match play in either the Ryder Cup or this event, they've been in the same group 18 times in official PGA Tour events, with Woods shooting the lower score on nine occasions and tying three times.

Both players drove it long and into the rough, but Woods blinked, leaving a 45-yard shot short and in a bunker.

The misadventures not only cost McIlory a chance to tie the match but put Woods 2 up and on the brink of victory.

"I can't finish worse than second", Kisner said.

"It is a loss of hole, I understand that, the only issue was, Kuch was like "I didn't want to take the hole, and do it like this".

Video Streaming Subscription Service
The company also unveiled Apple Arcade , a video game subscription service with over 100 games to start and more to be added. Today is the day that Apple finally announces the video streaming service that we have been expecting for so, so long now.

Earlier in the week Woods beat Aaron Wise and Patrick Cantlay during the round robin session of the WGC Match Play. Kisner won the round 1 up on his way to the final.

Woods had led 3-up through 10 holes, then saw McIlroy fight back with a chance to tie before making a mess of the 16th hole, one he appeared destined to win but ended up conceding.

It all happened too soon for Kuchar to have formally conceded which led Garcia to lose the hole and fall 2 down.

Fresh off an unbelievable left-handed shot on a ball that was under a bush during Thursday's action, Tiger continued the theatrics on Friday afternoon by sinking an 82-yard wedge shot on the par-4 13th for an eagle 2.

Both found tough spots on the 18th, Molinari in a bunker and Kisner in a slight divot hole. Kisner lost to Bubba Watson in last year's final after beating Alex Noren in 19 holes in the semifinals. He holed a 12-foot birdie putt that snapped hard to the right at the end on No. 17, knowing Woods was in tight for a certain birdie.

Whatever dwindling hopes McIlroy might have had flickered out when Woods stared down a 13-foot putt, then sank it to close out McIlroy 2&1.

McIlroy looked set to regain that hole at the sixth when Woods found the fairway bunker but the American fired a fine five wood just short of the green before nearly holing out a superb up-and-down.

Woods followed with birdies at 14 and 16.
