Chicago Plans To Bill Jussie Smollett For Investigation

Mayor Rahm Emanuel on Thursday emphatically urged President Trump to butt out of the ongoing drama over embattled "Empire" actor Jussie Smollett.

But after Chicago police investigated, they alleged that Smollett had hired two men to stage the attack, though those charges were dropped by the prosecutor on Tuesday.

An organization that represents about 2,700 prosecutors' offices around the country is slamming Cook County State's Attorney Kim Foxx in Chicago for her actions in the Jussie Smollett case.

Smollett, who is black and gay, ignited a firestorm on social media by telling police on January 29 that two apparent supporters of U.S. President Donald Trump struck him, put a noose around his neck and poured bleach over him.

Prosecutors have said that they stand by the police investigation and the decision to file charges against Smollett. Smollett said that a late-night trip to a Subway restaurant in Chicago led to two men attacking him, putting a noose on him, and pouring on him a substance he believed to be bleach.

Smollett maintained his innocence during the investigation against him, saying on Tuesday, "I have been truthful and consistent on every level since day one". In fact Joe Magats, first assistant state's attorney, said: "We believe [Smollett] did what he was charged with doing". Foxx then called Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson to ask him to let the FBI investigate the alleged attack.

In an interview with TIME, Ocasio-Cortez expressed frustration with critics who have picked apart the resolution . Democrat activists have championed it as a necessary policy to combat the deadly issue of climate change.

She also insisted no one tried to intervene on Smollett's behalf, despite emails showing that Foxx was contacted by people linked to Smollett about the case.

'We are looking for examples, felony preferable, where we, in exercising our discretion have entered into verbal agreements with defense attorneys to dismiss charges against an offender if certain conditions were met, such as the payment of restitution, completion of community service, completion of class, etc. but the defendant was not placed in a formal diversion program. Foxx told the Sun-Times the relative expressed concerns over leaked information that media outlets attributed to "police sources".

If the case had gone to trial, Foxx said, Smollett never would have received a prison term because the 16 charges were the lowest possible form of felony.

Meanwhile, Smollett's lawyer, Tina Glandian, said she is "not at all" concerned about an investigation of Smollett by the Department of Justice and FBI in an appearance on NBC's Today show Thursday.

However, prosecutors in Cook County, Illinois on Tuesday dropped all charges against the actor following a surprise court hearing.

"The court file was not supposed to be sealed".
