EU Official Says No-Deal Brexit Becoming More Likely

"A hard Brexit becomes almost inevitable".

Discussing his meeting with Mr Macron in Paris on Tuesday, Mr Varadkar said he was "really heartened by the enormous support" that France continued to demonstrate towards Ireland and, by Mr Macron's statement that Ireland would never be abandoned by France or by the EU. The question of how to retain seamless cross-border trade has been a major hurdle in efforts to ensure the United Kingdom quits the bloc in an orderly fashion.

"Over the last days a no-deal scenario has become more likely, but we can still hope to avoid it", Barnier said, adding the EU was ready to accept Britain remaining within the EU's customs union or a relationship similar to the one the EU has with Norway. The bulk of Irish exports to the continental European Union are shipped via the UK.

In the event of a no-deal Brexit, Varadkar said Ireland would have dual priorities: protecting the 1998 Good Friday Agreement, which ushered in 20 years of relative peace and stability in Northern Ireland, and protecting the EU's single market. "I hope he does but we will see".

He called on them to come up with options "now" - warning that a potential long extension to the Brexit process should not be taken for granted.

"That is a complex challenge and we always said it would be".

He said the league had plans to spend around $500 million to $750 million over the first five years to get it off the ground. But the truth is that even for a lot of people who love football, by the start of February they've had enough.

Therefore it was "a question of violence or no violence and here we naturally want to make a contribution", Merkel said.

"If the United Kingdom is not capable, nearly three years after the referendum, of coming forward with a solution that is supported by a majority, it will have effectively chosen a no-deal exit on its own", he said.

She stressed that ultimately "the solution has to be found by Great Britain itself" and expressed hope that Prime Minister Theresa May "will be successful".

Britain, Ireland and the European Union fear the installation of physical customs infrastructure on the border could reignite largely dormant sectarian tensions and prove a tempting target for militants seeking a united Ireland and those who oppose it.
