US, Turkey tell each other to choose: North Atlantic Treaty Organisation or not

April FrancisApr 05, 2019

Besides tensions centering around arms deals, Turkey has been expressing continuing concerns over Washington's support to the Syrian Kurdish militias, which are at the forefront of the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). "Nobody, neither west nor Russian Federation, should ask us to choose".

"NATO is not capable enough to cover our airspace yet, not only the Turkish", the foreign minister stressed dismissing U.S. and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation reasons that the S-400 systems were incompatible with Western systems.

At his Senate Armed Services Committee nomination hearing to lead U.S. European Command, Air Force Gen. Tod Wolters called the co-location of the F-35 and the S-400 "absolutely unsustainable". Russian Federation will deliver the first batch of the defence batteries in late 2019.

Ankara is also planning to purchase 100 F-35 fighter jets from the USA and its pilots are now training on the weapons platform at Luke Air Force Base in Arizona.

Acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan said today that he expects to be able to salvage USA military sales to Turkey that have been jeopardized by Ankara's insistence on buying a Russian missile defense system.

As a result, USA government leaders have repeatedly threatened to shut down Turkey's participation in the F-35 program if the Russian purchase goes through.

The Trump administration has made great strides in recent months to transform the cash-strapped and perpetually ailing North Atlantic Treaty Organization into a viable global military force that has the capabilities to confront Russian Federation and other rogue regimes allied with terror forces. He says he remains interested in getting the Patriot missile system, but insists the S-400 deal with Russian Federation is done and Turkey is not turning back.

The United States has already suspended all F-35 shipments to Turkey as a result of the conflict.

Act Party leader David Seymour described it as a "rushed process" that would "deny the public the chance to have their say". Ardern will address the service, which has the theme "We Are One" and will be broadcast on national television.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo warned Turkey of "devastating" consequences if it attacks Syria. "This is not a choice for us", he said.

Turkey has continued to maintain that it has the right under global law to defend against national security threats including any potential danger posed in northern Syria.

"Turkey must choose - does it want to remain a critical partner of the most successful military alliance in the history of the world, or does it want to risk the security of that partnership by making reckless decisions that undermine our alliance?"

"The radar is an electronic intelligence collection platform", said Aaron Stein, director of the Foreign Policy Research Institute's Middle East program.

Turkey's Foreign Affairs Ministry, however, balked at Palladino's description of the conversation between the two men, saying it was "obviously prepared before the meeting" was held.

"Turkey is a partner in the supply chain in the Joint Strike Fighter, so we not only have to look at whether we can transfer those assets to Turkey, but we also have to determine what role Turkey could play in the supply chain", Tillis said.

The state has also carried two-cross border operations in the region.
