Kirstjen Nielsen Out As DHS Secretary

April FrancisApr 08, 2019

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristjen Nielsen will be leaving her position, President Donald Trump tweeted Sunday. McAleenan is a longtime border official who is well-respected by members of Congress and within the administration.

The people say she has been frustrated by difficulty getting other departments to help with the growing number of families coming crossing the border.

She joined the administration as chief of staff to John Kelly, who was Trump's first Homeland Security secretary.

Nielsen had a 5 p.m. meeting Sunday at the White House with Trump where she was planning to discuss with him immigration and border issues and a path forward, senior administration officials tell CNN.

CBS News reported that Nielsen's departure is part of a "massive overhaul" of DHS "engineered and directed" by Stephen Miller, a top Trump adviser and immigration hardliner.

US President Donald Trump announced on Monday that US Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen is stepping down. Once Kelly left the White House a year ago, Nielsen's days appeared to be numbered. The Wall Street Journal reported in November that Trump had chose to replace Nielsen.

Recently, the President has spoken several times about the idea of shutting down the southern border entirely.

It was unclear whether Nielsen resigned voluntarily or was asked to do so. She was tasked with helping states secure elections following Russian interference during the 2016 election.

Her department has been responsible for carrying out some of Mr Trump's most contentious policies, such as his plan to build a Mexico border wall and the separation of migrant children from their families. Nielsen, who served in President George W. Bush's administration, never overcame internal skepticism about her allegiance to Trump.
