House panel chairman gives IRS April 23 deadline on Trump taxes

House Ways and Means Chairman, Democrat Richard Neal, sets a new deadline for the IRS to turn over President Trump's tax returns. Neal is relying on a 1920s-era law that says the IRS "shall furnish" any tax return requested by the chairmen of key House and Senate committees.

The letter to IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig is the latest exchange in a tug of war over Trump's returns, which would give lawmakers far greater insight into the president's business dealings and potential conflicts of interest as it exercises its oversight role. If Rettig fails to do so, Neal said he will interpret as denying the request, which could pave the way for a court battle.

"It is not the proper function of the IRS, Treasury, or Justice to question or second guess the motivations of the Committee or its reasonable determinations regarding its need for the requested tax returns and return information", Neal wrote.

Mnuchin's concerns "lack merit", Neal wrote.

Democrats initially set a 10 April deadline for the returns but this week treasury secretary Steven Mnuchin said he needed more time to assess issues raised by the request. Rep. Lloyd Doggett, D-Texas, said in a statement that alluded to the 1924 statute that mandates the IRS provide any taxpayer's returns when asked by a handful of top lawmakers.

Republicans have called the request as an overreach of confidential taxpayer data.

Fassi hugged her when Kupcho hit 6-iron to 2 feet on No. 6 for birdie. She had an eagle, 5 birdies, and 5 bogeys on the card. It's just great to be able to do that", Kupcho said.

"The legal implications of this request could affect protections for all Americans against politically-motivated disclosures of personal tax information, regardless of which party is in power", Mnuchin wrote on Wednesday.

Mr Neal is the only member of the House of Representatives authorised to request individual tax information under a federal law.

According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, Illinois is one of 18 states nationwide considering legislation on Trump's tax returns, which also includes New York, Colorado and Washington.

Trump has repeatedly claimed that he's being audited and can't publicize his tax returns, breaking with decades of traditions where candidates release their tax returns as they run for president.

Donald Trump will have to release five years of tax returns if he wants appear on the IL 2020 presidential ballot, the state's senate has ruled.

Mr Trump himself has claimed that he can not release his tax returns because they are under audit, although technically there is nothing preventing him from doing so.
