TikTok also said that to date, "we have removed over 6 million videos that violated our terms of use and community guidelines, following an exhaustive review of contents generated by our users in India".

"Indian Govt. Orders Google, Apple To Remove TikTok; What About Existing Users Of TikTok?", 5 out of 5 based on 4 ratings.

The Madras High Court had earlier banned fresh downloads of TikTok and the Supreme Court too refused to stay the ban.

The move follows a ruling by the Madras High Court, which ordered its removal from app stores over concerns that it was being used to spread pornography.

The Madras High Court recently denied the stay order on popular mobile application TikTok, and the government on Tuesday asked Google and Apple to comply with the court order and to block access to the application.

Authorities said the women were branded by a surgical tool with a symbol that resembled Raniere's initials. The charges stem from her alleged role in a reported sex slave ring within Albany, New York-based NXIVM.

Google and Apple have both blocked the new downloads of TikTok from the Play Store and App Store respectively in India, a country that accounts for over 230 million downloads and is known to have contributed to a massive uptick in userbase in the last 3 months. ByteDance contended in front of the Supreme Court that the app is like any other social media platform, and singling out of TikTok is discriminatory and arbitrary and that the "disproportionate" ban has resulted in infringement of fundamental right to freedom of speech and expression.

A spokesperson for TikTok said the firm had "faith in the Indian judicial system" and that it was "optimistic about an outcome that would be well received" by its millions of users.

Jokes, clips and footage related to India's thriving movie industry dominate the app's platform, along with memes and videos in which youngsters, some scantily clad, lip-sync and dance to popular music. The app was globally ranked third amongst the most installed apps during the first quarter of 2019. On Tuesday, the Madras High Court also pushed the hearing to April 24.

In its court filing, ByteDance argued that a "very minuscule" proportion of TikTok content was considered inappropriate or obscene.

The company employs more than 250 people in India and had plans for more investment as it expands the business, it said.
