Boy, 5, Thrown from Mall Balcony 'Showing Real Signs of Recovery'

April FrancisApr 22, 2019

The family of a young boy who was thrown from a balcony at the Mall of America is showing improvement. Landen's mother told officers that Aranda approached her, her friend, her friend's child, and Landen, and she asked if they were in his way.

It says that results have been "positive", and they're gaining "more reason for optimism day by day".

"Just know that we all feel your overwhelming love, prayers and support", the update reads.

Landen suffered broken bones and severe head trauma when he was thrown over the railing and plunged an estimated 39 or 40 feet to the hard floor of MOA.

A statement released Friday, and another posted on the family's GoFundMe, said the boy remains in intensive care at Children's Hospital in Minneapolis, but recent test results have been encouraging.

Tillitt said Friday the family continues requesting privacy as they focus on their son and his recovery, but updates will be shared with the community. "Thank you so much from all of us and have a blessed Easter weekend".

Officers located him waiting for the light rail train and arrested him. He planned to kill an adult but ended up choosing the boy instead.

Arizona's Linden, Fauble highlight USA finishers in Boston Marathon

"He said he formed a plan to kill someone at the mall" the day before. Aranda remained silent as he lifted the boy up over the balcony, "without warning", and threw him down to the first floor, according to the charging documents.

Aranda is charged in Hennepin County with attempted murder.

The man accused of throwing Landen, 24-year-old Emmanuel Deshawn Aranda, allegedly later told police he was "looking for someone to kill" after he'd been rejected by multiple women over the years at the mall, according to reports.

Aranda was previously banned from the mall for throwing water in a woman's face and destroying property. Asked by the judge whether he had any questions, he said, "Not at all".

Following his arrest, Aranda's bail was set at $2 million and his hearing has been set for Tuesday, May 14.

Court records reveal that Aranda had been ordered to undergo psychological examination or therapy following the mall assaults that are earlier.
