Huawei says launches 'world's first' 5G communications hardware for autos

Oscar PerryApr 23, 2019

The US Central Intelligence Agency has accused the Chinese technology giant of being sponsored by the country's authorities, The Times newspaper reported on Saturday, citing a source.

Despite a call from the United States to boycott Huawei's equipment and backbone network infrastructure, South Korean mobile carrier LGU+ adopted Huawei's equipment to establish a 5G network, saying it had no problem when using Huawei's equipment for 4G services.

The limited results announcement comes at a time when Washington has intensified a campaign against unlisted Huawei, alleging its equipment could be used for espionage and urging United States allies to ban it from building next-generation 5G mobile networks.

However, new information from The Times reveals that the CIA has finally divulged critical information that could sway the Five Eyes Intelligence Group, consisting of the U.S., the UK, Australia, Canada and New Zealand. Some U.S. allies, particularly Germany, have seemed sceptical of the claims.

Huawei, via a statement to the Sunday Times, dismissed the allegations as unsubstantiated.

A sign warns people of measles in the ultra-Orthodox Jewish community in Williamsburg on April 10, 2019 in New York City. Measles is highly contagious, though only for those who haven't been vaccinated, which usually occurs during childhood.

Huawei has also been in the news regarding the fate of its chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou, who has been detained in Canada for possible extradition to the US over claims of violations of Iran sanctions and banking fraud. Huawei has repeatedly said the security allegations it faces are groundless and not supported by any factual evidence.

Huawei (華為) whose name can be read as "Splendid Act" or "China Acts" from left to right, or simply "For China" from right to left, was founded by Ren Zhengfei (任正非), a former member of the PLA in 1987.

Huawei, which is now dominating the Chinese smartphone market, had registered a monstrous growth in its consumer electronics business a year ago. "Such accusations are groundless and misleading". A Whitehall source said of the review: "I don't think it's massively supportive [towards Huawei]". It is understood that a range of outcomes have been examined in it regarding Huawei's involvement in 5G, ranging from no action to an outright ban.

Minister of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) AmrTalaat affirmed Egypt's interest in cooperating with Huawei in the field of Artificial intelligence and transferring technology as well as the fifth generation technology (5G).
