How Switch stacks up against other Nintendo hardware

Marion JacobsApr 27, 2019

The Nintendo Switch is no different. The Switch sold 2.47 million more units in the first three months of this year, pushing its lifetime sales to 34.74 million and eclipsing the N64's 32.93 million. Nintendo had initially forecast sales of 20 million units before Furukawa took up the role in June.

3DS sold 170,000 units during Q4, and 2.55 million for the fiscal year ending March 31, down 60.2% year-on-year.

Perhaps more important than hardware is software sales. Analysts expected 350 billion yen of operating profit, but Nintendo only achieved 260 billion yen. That said, though, the Nintendo CEO did state that the company is always developing and working on hardware internally, which potentially leaves the door open for a possible reveal of new versions of the Switch in the future.

Following this report, Nintendo CEO Shuntaro Furukawa has made a decision to clear the air on the matter and declare that the video game company has no intentions of revealing new hardware for the Switch during E3 2019.

Huawei says launches 'world's first' 5G communications hardware for autos
Huawei has repeatedly said the security allegations it faces are groundless and not supported by any factual evidence. A Whitehall source said of the review: "I don't think it's massively supportive [towards Huawei]".

Bloomberg also echoes Nikkei in suggesting that a "more powerful version" of the system, rumored by the WSJ, is not now in the works.

There's no chance that a 7nm Switch would match the performance of the PS5 or Xbox Next, but the performance and processing power leap from 20nm to 7nm would give Nintendo a significant set of upgrades to discuss in its own right, with potential resolution improvements and detail level increases.

The industry is facing a shake-up with established console gaming companies like Nintendo and Sony Corp exposed to competition from new entrants like Alphabet Inc's Google offering browser-based games streaming services.
