Mississippi River causing major flooding across the Midwest

Kerry GarnerMay 04, 2019

FEMA says the Mississippi River is expected to crest Wednesday at more than 22 feet, approaching an all-time record set in 1993.

A temporary flood barrier failed in Davenport on Tuesday, submerging downtown blocks and forcing some people to seek shelter on rooftops. Heavy 1-3 inch rainfall during the past 24 hrs on top of already saturated soils from previous rains for the most part were direct run-off into already swollen rivers and streams.

In Hannibal, Missouri, the MS is expected to crest Friday afternoon at the third-highest level on records, the Hannibal Courier-Post reports.

Davenport Mayor Frank Klipsch said there were no reports of injuries.

Mandatory evacuations will be put into place once the river reaches 24.6 feet.

"It's pretty much the entire river, all the way to the Gulf of Mexico", Mike McClure, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Davenport, said Tuesday.

Ahead of this historic flooding, in the midst of the heavy rains, hundreds of volunteers worked to reinforce the levees and barriers, but it wasn't enough to keep the mighty Mississippi River at bay.

Sandbagging begins Thursday on the Peoria riverfront as the Illinois River pushes past flood stage. The weather service forecasts a crest of 35.5 feet by Sunday or Monday in Alton.
