Nancy Pelosi accuses US Attorney General of lying to Congress

His remarks came after Attorney General William Barr, a Trump appointee, refused to attend the same hearing before Nadler's committee, which is examining Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 election and Trump's efforts to stifle the probe.

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi accused the top law-enforcement officer in the United States of committing a crime by lying to Congress, escalating the showdown between Donald Trump's administration and the Democrats investigating him.

Earlier in the day, House of Representatives Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler set a new deadline of Monday at 9am (1300 GMT) for Barr to comply with a subpoena seeking an unredacted version of the report before moving to hold Barr in contempt of Congress.

Barr told the Committee Wednesday that after Mueller expressed frustration in letters to him about the accuracy of Barr's four-page conclusion that was released in the days after Mueller's report, the two talked by phone.

Need to Impeach, a group pushing impeachment of President Trump, is planning to have Virginia-based supporters file complaints against Barr with the Virginia State Bar, for which the attorney general is a member. Meanwhile, Trump's lawyer Emmet Flood accused Mueller and his special counsel's office (SCO) of politicising their report when they wrote that "we are unable to reach that judgment" that the president did not commit obstruction of justice. In both hearings he made no mention of a March 27 letter from Mueller objecting to Barr's own letter notifying Congress of the completion of the report.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is concerned President Donald Trump will not voluntarily step down unless Democrats win by a "big" enough margin in 2020 that he doesn't contest the results, the New York Times reported Saturday. "Democrats continue to cite no precedent for the Justice Department ceding Congress grand jury materials outside of impeachment proceedings, and today's letter is inaccurate in claiming the Justice Department provided information to Congress as part of the Starr investigation".

Within minutes of Ms Pelosi's comments, Justice Department spokeswoman Kerri Kupec called her words "reckless, irresponsible and false". Pockets of Democrats are already calling for Barr's impeachment, including Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., who is running for president.

President Donald Trump was beefing up his legal defense team amid allegations that his campaign had colluded with Russian Federation.

Infuriated Democrats quickly threatened to censure him for contempt.

While Graham is not planning on having Mueller testify, the House Judiciary Committee is working to secure his appearance later this month, with May 15 as a target date, though it's yet to be finalized. Trump wanted to know whether the semiretired Barr was "envisioning some role here", but Barr said he wasn't.

The House Judiciary Committee has served McGahn with a subpoena in its investigation into obstruction, asking that McGahn testify before the panel on May 21.

Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler said Barr's no-show followed a dispute between House Democrats and Barr over whether Barr would publicly face questions from committee staff attorneys.

Harris also pointed out details in Mueller's report that notes at least three occasions where Trump called for an investigation into Hillary Clinton, whom he ran against him in the 2016 election.
