Google to roll out new Android Auto interface

Marion JacobsMay 08, 2019

Perhaps tomorrow's event is just too jam-packed full of awesomeness to include Android Auto, but for whatever the reason, there's plenty of new stuff to talk about.

But to really make sure your data is safe, Google is changing the way you can control and assess what kind of data gets stored on your device, and how it gets shared. Chromebooks have been able to run Android apps for years now, but the experience is often sub-par, simply because developers don't have big displays in mind when building those apps. "We want to help you take advantage of the latest new technology - 5G, foldables, edge-to-edge screens, on-device AI, and more - while making sure users' security, privacy, and wellbeing are always a top priority".

Android Auto, as most of you know, is a mobile app developed by Google which mirrors features and interface from an Android device connected to the head unit/infotainment system of a vehicle.

Launched in 2015, Google's Android Auto was made to mirror features from an Android device to a car's compatible in-dash information and entertainment head unit. In a new notification center, drivers will get centralized information about all of their communications, including recent calls, messages and alerts. Apart from that, "Hey Google" can be also used to navigate or toggle any functions. There's also a button on the navigation bar that gives you instant access to the Google Assistant, while the Home button now resides in the bottom left corner.

Suspects in custody after ‘multiple students’ injured in Denver school shooting
Police in the USA city of Denver are hunting a third suspected gunman after a school shooting which injured multiple students. Multiple injuries to students have been reported, but a specific number and the severity of the injuries are unknown.

You can see Live Caption in action by watching the video below. Google is also improving parental controls so that parents can set usage limits on individual apps as well.

As an added bonus, the system will resume playing previous media when reconnected and automatically start the driver's preferred navigation app. Google needs the OK from tons of safety governing bodies around the world before it can do a rollout, so pushing any new code is pretty much a nightmare. The aforementioned automakers have been working closely with Google to modify the system to mesh with their own brand design motifs as well, so in some instances, you might not even recognize Android Automotive from the outset.

Furthermore, Google is also giving the Google Assistant the ability to respond to multiple requests without saying "OK, Google" or "Hey, Google" every time, which essentially supercharges how fast you can converse with the Google Assistant.
