North Korea Fired Two Missiles, Says South Korea's Military

April FrancisMay 12, 2019

According to the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the missiles were fired from the north-eastern city of Kusong toward the eastern waters between 4:29 p.m. and 4:39 p.m. It was not immediately clear what happened to the rest of the crew, which at least at one time totaled two dozen members. North Korea conducted two rounds of ballistic missile tests in a week, its first such activity in almost a year and a half.

A U.S. Defense Department spokesman said after the new tests: "We're aware of the reports and monitoring". "Both South and US militaries are analyzing the details of the projectile".

Missile tests could jeopardise the ongoing diplomacy if they violate UN Security Council bans on ballistic technology.

"The relationship continues. I know they want to negotiate, they're talking about negotiating".

"They were ballistic missiles and that puts it in contravention of United Nations resolutions", Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Kotaro Nogami said at a regular press briefing.

"North Korea seemed to be discontented it could not reach a deal in Hanoi", he told South Korean broadcaster KBS, while adding that he saw the tests as a sign that North Korea wanted to negotiate and that he planned to push for a fourth inter-Korean summit with Kim.

The launch comes as the United States special representative for North Korea, Stephen Biegun, visits South Korea.

On Thursday, Trump appeared to hold the door open for more talks with North Korea.

Pompeo to Portray China as a Threat in Major Arctic Policy Speech
The report mentions the word "Arctic" 21 times - last year's report mentioned it one time. And China's air force has flown its J-20 fifth-generation aircraft, Schriver said.

North Korea sought to disguise the nationality of the ship and the origin of its cargo, according to the complaint. Those included increasing pressure for sanctions relief, and protesting Seoul's military buildup including the purchase of new F-35 fighter aircraft as well as joint military drills by the United States and South Korea, which North Korea complained about in statements defending the tests. "Our focus is on the denuclearization", White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders told reporters Thursday.

"Our focus is on the denuclearization".

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo stressed that the worldwide community should maintain pressure on North Korea until it gives up its nuclear weapons program completely.

North Korea's state media said that leader Kim Jong Un had overseen a rocket and tactical guided weapons test.

"For the sake of peace and maintaining the momentum of dialogue with North Korea, humanitarian assistance should be implemented as soon as possible", Rep. He has met twice with the North Korean leader and claimed that the two have a special friendship and even "love". "If the South provides food aid now, the North will think their provocation bore fruit".

The Yonhap News Agency later quoted the JCS as saying that the missiles had reached an altitude of about 50 km. It is known to have a range of up to 500 kilometers.

"The Trump administration keeps downplaying these missiles because they are not ICBMs, but even though they can't reach the USA mainland, it's missiles like these that will start the war", said Melissa Hanham, a weapons expert at Datayo, which tracks worldwide security threats.

Tensions in the region had significantly improved during the period with no missile or nuclear tests being carried out.
