Republican senator takes GOP fire over Trump Jr. subpoena

April FrancisMay 12, 2019

Much of the backlash against the decision by Chairman Richard Burr of North Carolina to subpoena President Donald Trump's eldest son came from GOP senators who are up for reelection next year and from those closely aligned with the president.

It was the first known legal summons issued by Congress to a member of the president's family to force testimony in the ongoing investigation. Trump Jr. told the Senate Judiciary Committee in a separate interview in 2017 he was only "peripherally aware" of the proposal.

The reported subpoena prompted sharp rebukes from some of Trump's staunchest defenders within the party as Republicans sought to move on from a two-year investigation by U.S. Special Counsel Robert Mueller, whose findings were released in part last month.

He repeated that his son is a "good person" and testified for "hours and hours", and was ultimately "exonerated by Mueller". John Cornyn, R-Texas, who said he understands the younger Trump's "frustration".

Dick Durbin: Trump 'Googly-Eyed ' By Putin's Denial of Venezuelan Involvement
Putin asked Trump to take 'steps to ease the sanctions pressure on North Korea , ' according to the embassy's readout. Trump said the two leaders were also considering a new nuclear agreement "where we make less and they make less".

Later, Blumenthal added onto his comments about Trump Jr., saying that President Donald Trump's oldest son "has no privilege, he has no right to say no. Yeah, I'm pretty surprised".

41, has testified voluntarily in private once to the committee, and was peppered with questions about a June 9, 2016 meeting in Trump Tower in NY that he and other senior Trump campaign officials had with a Russian lawyer offering dirt on Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. Cohen told a House committee in February that he had briefed Trump Jr. approximately 10 times about a plan to build a Trump Tower in Moscow before the presidential election. Trump said he was "very surprised" at the move.

"That's a bit intriguing", Dupree said of the subpoena on "America's Newsroom", adding that until this point, the call for additional witnesses and a "follow-up to [Robert] Mueller. has been divided along partisan lines". But at a closed-door lunch of GOP senators, he explained the reasoning behind the subpoena, according to people familiar with the discussion - including the timeline of the negotiations with Trump Jr. over his repeat testimony.

"We have a 400-plus page report that was determined after about $30 million of money spent, dozens of investigators, hundreds of subpoenas and inquisitions that there was no underlying crime and no obstruction", Tillis said. I think this is going to have a happy ending.
